So I have found myself on a nice doc site (so are better than ni).
It looks like a popular tramping area so am wondering if it worth taking the rifle for a walk.
Can't get doc maps or was to work on my phone so need to ask you good people.

If there's a chance of an animal there is no harm in having your rifle by your side or slung over your back. The 'bird watchers' will always give you a disturbed look but the way I look at it I've got just as much right to be there as them so they can stick there opinions.
Best of luck.
You know, if you need 100 rounds to kill a deer, maybe hunting isn't your sport.
yes definitely take your rifle, I have shot a lot of deer/caught pigs in mnt Thomas, its a very good spot. It will take a few trips for you to do some exploring but well worth it.
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
Good luck Pengy
"Hunting and fishing" fucking over licenced firearms owners since ages ago.
308Win One chambering to rule them all.
The bush is pretty thick and shitty, most of the best hunting is further back 2-3 hours. Mt Richardson is also worth a look. Flick me a PM for my phone number and I can give you some other info.
I hunted Mt Thomas I fair bit when at Lincoln. Let me have a look at a map

Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Caught a fair few pigs there back in the day.

Ok we went into pinchgut hut quite a bit then hunted up towards bobs camp bivy (note the bivy may not be there anymore). The worst part about that is getting wet feet not far from the car. And the hut is popular with trampers.
Also as stug says maybe look towards Mt Richsrdson.

Wasps are up it big time in there at the mo, been attacked a couple of times while cutting tracks recently.
Hot barrels Pengy....cant offer any advice though mate!
While I might not be as good as I once was, Im as good once as I ever was!
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
I had a quick couple of hours in the bush last night, but lots of disturbance from noisy trappers and quads. Also plenty of fresh footprints (human) heading up all main tracks. Not productive.
Popped out again this morning and 500 m from track start, I came across a nice steaming pile of deer pellets. Tracks led into the shotty horse filled gully and it was impossible to go quietly. Oh well.
Interestingly, the only fresh sign I came a cross was on or close to a small cleAring with loads of very active behives. Maybe the reds down here like Honey

Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms
I have caught a few pigs in winter off the track just past those beehives.
