Planning on heading out for a Waitangi weekend hunt with a good mate who has only recently started hunting. Anyone willing to suggest some reasonably successful Waikato spots that aren't too far out of Hamilton (young family and a worrying partner)? Probably wanting somewhere that won't be too congested and needs to be public land unless someone is willing to share private.
kaimais and Pureora if you pm @Spook he might be able to point you in the general area in the kaimais. theres also the wairere falls area in the kaimais. Pureora ring pureora area doc office they can help you there. north or east of piro piro flats thats about 2.5 hours from hamilton kaimais are your closest at under an hour.

there are a couple of small blocks between Morrinsville and Cambridge that you can get access to

Those blocks are balloted, so whatever you do, do not just rock up and go for a hunt. The local farmers are a bit touchy.
I have been to Te Tapui a couple of times, without success, but did get onto plenty of sign and spooked a couple. Nice little block

The Kaimais will be over run with hunters and trampers this time of the year. The bush up there is crappy. Your better of going to Murapara or Taupo. Better bush as well.
Get into north block pureora/ngaroma. Best numbers of animals for years and its gettin the green rain in june.

The trampers walk the tracks so you wont meet many, hunters should only be on tracks to gain access to other areas...if you are hunting in crappy bush in the Kaimai's then you are in the wrong place. I have taken more deer in the Kaimai's than any other place...helps that I live there but still the only time I hunt the thick stuff is for stags in the roar otherwise it is the fringes, clearings and slip faces. Judging by the cars in the car park at the road ends there are very few hunters or trampers in the bush today. There are plenty of deer, just not the hunters being good enough to be successful...so many are doing it all wrong... I was told yesterday of a guy, who while walking a particular track spooked six deer before he got a crack at one...and that walk was a quick after work before dark jauntQuote:

For a beginner, Taupo or Pureora as other members have suggested. Taupo area seems to have good numbers of Sika at present so If your sneaky one for the pot should be fairly easy !
