words of wisdom...... look after the fellas who taught you how to hunt, get them out when you can, drop off meat when you have surplus.
get young fellas out and show them LIFE.... hopefully in a few years time they will look after you,if not, well you did your bit.
do it NOW......before its too late.....goes for many many things
look after your back n knees.....they dont get better as we age, only worse.
stop and smell the roses, dont worry if guy holding other end of piano thinks your bonkers,DO IT...God put em here for only that reason, for us to enjoy....and it will give you micro pause and reset in a hectic day.
Love your wife and enjoy the kids while they are still at home.

I was the same at your age MD - then Father Time slowly did a number on my body - now that Im almost 20 years older than you I need glasses, one ear hears better than the other (too much unsupressed gunfire!) and had both knee joints replaced, skin is thinner (bush lawyer gives my hands gyp nowadays) etc.

Getting old is not for the faint hearted…

@Finnwolf I'm 58 and at times still like to think I'm 28.... Still try to do the same stuff; just takes longer to recover! I was hunting with a mate a while ago, we've hunted together for 40-years. I said to him "I'm sure I didn't have to take an ibuprofen in the morning before going for a hunt, and after. And then an Epsom salts bath afterwards to soothe the muscles whenwe were 18! And; didn't go back to the shearer's quarters for a nanna nap at lunchtime!"

"Getting old is not for the faint hearted…" It was Bette Davis who said, "Old age ain't no place for sissies!" I spent a year visiting my dad (usually daily) when he had to go to a home due to Alzheimers.... It was sobering to watch his decline and that of the other residents in that 12-month period. He was a strong, fit, independent farmer and to see what he was reduced to over that 12-months was pretty heartbreaking. But it also made you realise what was ahead, and to make the most of being fit (or fit-ish in my case!)

The other really sobering sight was the number of younger people in there with issues like MS etc...

Not long ago a mate said to me "You realise at our age we've probably got around 20-years in front of us, and the last 10 won't be fun".... Make the most of being above the ground and able to get into the hills!

got to watch my old man slowly die from Parkinson's not something you'd wish on anyone but there's more people deserving of it than him. Had all these dreams and plans of things he was going to do in his retirement.....but never made it that far. Make the most of every day and if you cant try and make someone elses day as you don't know when your numbers up...you don't get a practice run at this one....

Too true. Those old injuries ( rugby for me ) that you brushed off when you were younger certainly do come back with vengeance as you age. My left knee gives me grief for a few days after a big walk sometimes.

I’m at the bottom end of this one….quite regular is the dark time trip to the pissor….
Looking at getting a cordless batten gun for myself as the wrists don’t like it old school anymore.

Get out as often as I can amongst spending time with the kids before they depart for other pastures. Have to start devoting time to spend with granddaughter now…

Haven’t carried out whole animals for a while now…unless it’s a fallow and or it’s close to a vehicle.

Dead right -‘life is not a rehearsal’

I saw too many pop off before reaching retirement - or within one or two years of retirement.

So when I got to 65 I handed in my notice.

And done heaps of stuff since then

At the bottom end of the scale. Body started falling to bits at 40.
Recoveing from a ruptered disk at L3 at the moment so have lost a lot of muscle and fitness and I am slowly clawing it back.
At the rate Im going 60 is really gonna hurt.
"Hunting and fishing" fucking over licenced firearms owners since ages ago.

yip Im to old and ornary to put up with crap anymore...life is just too short.
Ive seen crap happen to good people and seen young folks go down wrong path and stuff up lifes best chances...worked with fcukwits n arseholes ,had numerous mongrels for boss's and some really good ones...so I tend to be a tad cynical now....
as young man I believed what people told me....a mans word is his bond is one of lifes mottos after all....oh boy has that one kicked my bum a few times....HATE liars...really hate the whole idea of lieing,it just makes every damn thing so hard.
but life is good, wife has cracked whip today...not only killed n dressed 3 sheep,we have recovered our wire netting and warratah standards from flooded reserves, body is tad sore now.

As an aside; I decided years before I turned 50 that I didn't want to be the judgemental, self-righteous old 50-ish year old that I hated when I was 18.... I don't mean the sort who gave good advice but the ones who did the "bloody music these days" etc type of bollocks. So have strived hard to not be a Pollyanna, but also not to be negative for the sake of being negative. Yup' it's bitten me on the arse a few times but has usually paid off handsomely. Not having a go at you MD; just my observation on my life
