Thread: New boots... It's time!!

I got some lastrite loggers earlier in the week, and based on my impressions so far, I’ll likely get a pair of tall ‘hunter’ boots, which are basically the same as the loggers, just without the toe cap.
Made in nz which is nice.

Have you weighed the last rites? I know they feel way lighter than my pfanner chainsaw boots, but those super heavy.

I did look at lastrite but wasn't too sure about them. Anyone on here like them?

I bought a pair of kostyle canyon from boots and gear Taupo. Used them in Fiordland and was very happy with them. Feet were kept dry despite a lot of river crossings and they are comfortable and light. At $465 they are also good value.

@Sideshow on the fifth eye bring the lace in from the top and out the bottom, that way it will lock. I’ve done that with another brand of boot.

Thanks @stug tried that this morning and it worked a treat did it on the 4th ones though as the 5th ones are the ones that dont lock.

I've worn the same pair of Salomon 4D GTX Boots for years, they're buggered now but have been fantastic.

I second the solomons, light as and comfy. for the price really nice just not as warm as the leather ones ect especially around this time of year. nice and stiff up top too, fit a wider foot. Main thing is the fact that there is no full rand but pretty tough in that area anyways.

I am mainly in the cantebury area and find that they work well at all altitudes and are really good for the price, other than these i would go tibets or something like that if funds allow.

I’m somewhere between a 12 - 13 depending on the shoe. It’s a bit of a nightmare finding shoes for these hooves if I’m honest. The number I’m of times I have purchased shoes only to find out after a few days of wear that they’re too small by a tiny amount. I work from home so frequently go barefoot which I don’t think helps as it makes shoes seem tighter.

@SparkyRC here are my experiences with two of the boots your looking at

Hunter Element Zulus, I bought a pair 2-3 years ago when they were on sale, I found the sole wasn’t exactly flat, they fit well but aren’t waterproof and let in water easily due to them using fabric material around the tongue and not being a full leather boot. I also found my feet sweat… the boots are still good but I just use them as a work boot when out cutting firewood.

Salomon 4D GTX, fantastic boot where there’s no break in required, put ‘em on and go hunting, comfortable, ideal in the bush as they have great ankle support and lightweight for bush stalking as opposed to a heavy leather boot… they were my go too boots for the kaimanawas having gone through 2 pairs but using them in the alps was just too hard on them being used on rocks, scree slopes etc.

The only negative I will say for the Salomon’s was the grip, prior to using them I ran Meindl Island Pros which have a way better grip when walking around the hills.

At the moment I use Lowa Rangers and love them for the mountains and find them great, I went for the rangers as they were slightly lighter than the tibets.

I also use a pair of lowa Z6 and also find them a good lightweight boot for bush environments and would be very hard pressed to decide on them or another pair of Salomon’s 🤔

I one thing I did to the lowa boots was buy a set of proper inner soles for them, what an amazing difference that made, light night and day.

If your looking for a new set of boots and don't want to pay the $600 and up price tag. I got a pair of German special forces meindl boots from a surplus seller on eBay. They are "super grade" meaning they are basically brand new with minimal signs of use, even the soles still have the dimpling on the tread. All up $260 delivered to NZ which I didn't think was too bad. They have god stiff soles, grunty tread and solid ankle protection........just my two cents. Happy to send the link to anyone interested.
