Started my hunting around the Waikato in the very early 70's & found that the more productive areas reasonably close to Hamilton (say) were from Otorohanga south. Plenty of goats & the odd deer & pigs down Aria way especially on the road to Ohura. Hope that helps.
It can be rough country so there still should be good number of goats still there.
Call in on a few farmers would be a starter; just don't rock up to them with ammo belts crossing your chest, big knives swinging from your waist, or an attitude if you're turned down. Go to the next farmer....that's how I learned. I started when I bought my first rifle @ 16yrs old & have never looked back.
Aaaaahhhhhh!!!!!....the good old days.
Glad some younger ones are taking up the mantle & defying the gun grabbers.
