Thread: New Knife Needed

Well I been using a Bahco as my general hunting knife for a while , they are cheap and sharp as when new but quite hard to get that edge back ( well for me at least ) . They are also nice and light.
Would like to upgrade to something a bit classier , but still not over heavy and practical grip , what are people using as there go to , skinning / butchering in the hills knife ?

i use the bahcos as well but they still cant replace my eka swing blade ,rubber handle,bright colour so you can find it again when you put it down and hold an edge really well .about $170 from memory but i would happily buy another.just had a bit of a google and here is a link to my one cheers sig https://www.blademaster.co.nz/shop/S...ka/767308.html

I have a few Jacks in stock, always a good idea to go local, keeps us Kiwis working aye.

I’ve got a couple of nice bark rivers, but usually just take a pocket knife as that’s what I have with me all day everydayand I’ve got one of @Nga ‘jack’ knives.

if you cant resharpen a bacho...... you will be stuffed with a custom jobbie. a VERY quick whip up on cource steel or couple of slides across a ceramic rod has them back to razor sharp...
have a go...far better to learn how to do it on a $15-20 knife than a $150 job.
keep the bacho as a backup in your daybag...

There is not much point upgrading if you haven't been taught how to sharpen a knife first you will still end up with a blunt knife. The Bahcos respond to a medium steel if you know what to do - might need to finish with a couple of light strokes away from you to remove the burr as they are softish. A $20 flat diamond sharpener might be better.

First step: go to the local Butcher or homekill man for some training ( Mickey Ducks post wasn't there when I started writing mine, so sorry for repetition )

I have bought 2....but that's another story
agree with what has previously been said learn how to sharpen as it is a skill you will use time and time again.

There are thousands of options man. How much do you want to spend?

I have a simple ceramic rod set up.... its in a wee wooden box/holder....looks like two taylormade ciggys stuck in angled holes like a set of bunny ears...all you do is stroke knife across the rods,one side then the other...you hold knife edge down and keep it verticle...angle is set for you by the rods....just about idiot proof...has to be for me to use it.
