Haven't been there for years, but I can say that nelson lakes, head of either lake, is worth the effert, fishing, deer and chammy, the cob valley and the table lands is a nice bit of country. go explore, there is deer, pigs goats and chammy all over the place, trout is all rivers, and golden bay, the sounds, for something different.
I am working my way back to the top of the south or central.

I am sure they have, but, there are still animals in the hills, for those that put in the effert, there is thousands of KM of land around Nelson, I started hunting it in the late 80's and it was pretty skinny in places, others spots not so much, Just a matter of putting in the time and learning the area, surely still chammy around nelson lakes,
Spent sum time over the years in 1080 zones, still a few animals about.

I do have one question about 1080, is it hard on fallow deer, I know about reds, sika, pigs and goats, always wondered about fallow deer.

Seems it hasn't done the fallow any good up the cobb way from all reports. Still animals around the region thou, some effort is required and numbers are on the low side but if you know the areas you find something. Last 3 trips out in DOC around here got a deer, then a pig, then shot and lost a deer and saw a 6 pointer as well and that's in 3 totally different areas . Might go tomorrow maybe in the wind and see if I can track something down 4 trips in a row
