    New to Nelson

    Hi Everyone.

Ive just moved to nelson for work and would like to get out for a
hunt here. Ive been looking on the doc site and it is just mind boggling
how many places there are to go.
I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction.
Not after spot x but a starting point would be awesome.
If someone is keen to go for a walk sometime i would be more than
happy to organize something or tag along

    Thanks
    Tony

Nelson is a great area, I loved living there, used to work at goughs, on three brothers corner, lots of thing to do, and fishing and hunting options.
Haven't been there for years, but I can say that nelson lakes, head of either lake, is worth the effert, fishing, deer and chammy, the cob valley and the table lands is a nice bit of country. go explore, there is deer, pigs goats and chammy all over the place, trout is all rivers, and golden bay, the sounds, for something different.
I am working my way back to the top of the south or central.

I am sure they have, but, there are still animals in the hills, for those that put in the effert, there is thousands of KM of land around Nelson, I started hunting it in the late 80's and it was pretty skinny in places, others spots not so much, Just a matter of putting in the time and learning the area, surely still chammy around nelson lakes,
Spent sum time over the years in 1080 zones, still a few animals about.

I do have one question about 1080, is it hard on fallow deer, I know about reds, sika, pigs and goats, always wondered about fallow deer.

Seems it hasn't done the fallow any good up the cobb way from all reports. Still animals around the region thou, some effort is required and numbers are on the low side but if you know the areas you find something. Last 3 trips out in DOC around here got a deer, then a pig, then shot and lost a deer and saw a 6 pointer as well and that's in 3 totally different areas . Might go tomorrow maybe in the wind and see if I can track something down 4 trips in a row

still plenty of animals - just get out there - not many places barren of animals just need to be smart at what times to hunt them. also don't go slow until you actually find some fresh sign or youll be dicking round for ages. and go where people are common

Different story if its private land..heaps of deer in lots of private blocks around here. In well hunted Doc blocks where most have either had a good bombing or are going thur a good bombing of 1080 the deer numbers are certainly lower than many places elsewhere. I head out quite often, doing 8 hour plus days searching for deer around the region in DOC blocks. Signs not high, certainly in the many places I go. Still, I see or get a deer every 3 trips on average but sometimes its the only sign I see hunting all day but ive tracked it down. Of cause im day hunting, if you fly camped or headed further back and stayed in places like the head of the lakes etc you see a lot more deer but I do ok as getting out there is what matters and getting a animal is a bonus.

Animal numbers have certainly decreased in the last 3 or 4 years in the blocks ive been hunting , either because of hunting pressure by others, 1080 or by the animals ive been getting as some blocks ive done quite well. I now go somewhere new every 3 trip, looking for the pot of gold but genrally finding low deer sign(if any) and if im lucky I get a deer in the new block in 3-5 trips in and then head somewhere else new and so forth.
Doc blocks are certainly feeling the effects of the 1080, illeagal spotlighting around here and increase pressure of extra hunters. Still, the key is get of the beaten track, head up ridges and places that aren't so easy, where others may not be so keen to go and generally you still find some sign and after you been back a few times to work out the area you tend to see a deer and get one ok
