Thank you guys :)
Welcome
The best range is at Kaitoke and run by Hutt Valley Deerstalkers - they run a HUNTS course which is a good start if you aren't massively experienced.
Fee is something like $110 per year and another tenner for range key - info here

I presume you've got your A cat firearms license?
What do you want to hunt? Deer/Pigs/Goats/Ducks?
Heya, Thanks for that! I'm actually in mid process of getting it, Just have to get the visit from the arms officer to make sure my rack is in good order.
And I'll be getting an SKS 7.62x39 so probably deer/pigs/goats what not, I'd do birds like ducks and pheasants but I've heard its really hard finding places to shoot with a shotgun.
As I said I'm just getting into it over here, I used to do it with a bow back in Scotland.
Welcome to the forum.
Where about are you from in Scotland?
So you were illegally hunting in Scotland with bow?
If my memory serve me well you can't shoot something with an arrow anymore over there for a while. Only shotgun on game birds and rifle for the rest.
You can hunt with a bow here no problem.
The sks is not the best choice for what you intend to do.
Good luck
Thanks and Glasgow :)
Nope it is totally legal if it is on private land and over 45 pounds in draw weight(I only ever took rabbits with judo heads on my friends uncles farm). Almost impossible to get a firearm unless you are a farmer, Even for hunting purposes. Most people generally go for clay discs unless they live in the highlands where it is easier to get access to legal bird hunting, Even then it has to be private land.
I'm after the SKS because money is a little tight for me right now, It was either that or a mosin nagant, But I thought because of the length and weight it wouldn't make a very good firearm for hunting. The SKS has an effective range of about 450 yards which I'd imagine would be enough in general.. But i'm certainly no expert when it comes to firearms!
Welcome to.the forum SK.
welcome Scotty, I cant help with hunting spots around Wellington. If you are coming to the Coromandel I can introduce you to some good fishing.
What are you doing in New Zealand? I'm located in Wellington. Know fuck all spots around here but can take you for a walk.
Weather back in Scotia sucks and can't stand the politics over there, Plus got a wee bit of family :) And hope its not a long romantic walk on the beach!
Welcome to NZ and the forum dude
I think that effective range would be ability to wound a human at least once with a full mag.
I very much doubt you will find that is its real effective range as a hunting weapon on big game or small game.
Keep an eye out on here for a cheap sporting rifle second hand, they come up all the time. If you intend actually shooting Game at 450y you owe it to the animal to use a rifle and calibre that will do the job humanly and that your skills are up to scratch also.
Any of the popular NZ hunting calibers 6mm and up are capable of humane killing at those ranges if you do your part well tho it is at the extreme end of range for some without specialised loading.
Get yourself a 303 plenty on trade me for less than $400, will kill all you want.
Welcome SK.
For a hunting set up in my h o I'd never recommend a SKS.
6.5x55 are often as cheap as $400 and would suit your needs. .303 also. As VC and others have said we have some great calibre's that will do the job. Cheap at times too.
I wouldn't be in a huge hurry either. A walk around as an unarmed tramper looking for sign while accumulating another $200=$600 and we're talking an even better firearm; one that can last years and shoot as straight as any 'Highlander' would hope...
luck bro.
Thanks for the help everyone :) Didn't know it was legal to buy them online I thought it had to be from a dealer. Might look into it.
Mosin nagant for $250 from reloaders, and 203gr soft point from barnaul $1 per round (100 rounds inc courier cost)
I got a sks off trademe for $350, again barnaul is the cheapest soft point ammo at .60c per round, FMJ's from guncity are cheaper but not very effective on game.
I would recommended the mosin because stopping power and bayonet, but the sks will be a lot handier and more versatile like for things like possums and magpies.
Save up and buy a good used bolt action rifle in one of the popular medium deer hunting calibres Don't waste your money on an SKS; it's not a hunting rifle. Look on Trade Me or on here. Take your time and buy once.
Best to join the Deer Stalkers Association and ask the advice of some of the more experienced hunters there. You may even get invited on a hunt.
303 ishapore No1 mk3 | Trade Me
Here you go, an indian made lee enfeild chambered in 7.62 real feckin nato.
Actually a good deal and I have been looking for one of these. Gutted I am on holiday and no funds :(
Offer the guy 200 for it.
I am with the rest of the guys regarding the sks you can pick up some good parker hales in the popular calibers for around the $4-500 mark so do not limit yourself in choices also while waiting for your firearms license to be approved if you could save up the extra 2-300 dollars you could get a brand new marlin X7 with scope and for a budget rifle they are very accurate.
Jumping on the bandwagon also, SK, a few hundred will get you a Parker Hale in a number of decent humane calibres, a Lee Enfield, the Russian ect and you will have a rifle able to cleanly kill NZ game at sensible ranges, an SKS or anything else chambered in .762x39 is callous and irresponsible beyond a hundred yards. You are now in a country stacked full of hunters with generations of hunting experience. Listen.

My mistake I see that Ishapore is 303, I just saw that skim read that name and assumed 7.62 nato.
Shit I hope you ain't gonna go running round the hills with bayonet attached... I have seen some weird things in the hills, but I reckon that would take the cake....... I would suggest like the others to look around for something better suited to hunting than moisin or SKS.....save a bit more and get something that will make life easier for you.... Can get some decent guns cheap enough but don't rush into a sale.....find something that shoulders nicely and fits you.
Gonna get me a Moisin, stick the bayonet on, get me a tin hat and go charging around the hills, just gotta figure out how to get a deer to stand still long enough for me to shout "fix bayonets!" at the top of my lungs, and then "charge!", might not get many deer I guess, but you could bring your camera if you want:D
Sergei would be proud of you two.
What other WW2 milsurp full size rifle with matching bayonet can you get for 250? Unsporterized enfeilds with matching bayo any year, go for well over 500. Ammo is still in service so availability is excellent.
Rightio, Im probably gonna take a bit of stick for this. I use an ex army .303 have done all my shooting with it.
The type of shot I typically make is pretty close, 15-50 meters.
If I could see a deer at 450 m, Id get closer.
$400 will get you a pretty good Three O. Its a fact that more deer have been shot in this country with this calibre than anything else.
You are pretty handy to the Wairarapa and Aorangi forest park (a.k.a Haurangi's) a RHA. well worth a visit.
Rimutuka's hold animals too.
Cheers,good luck,
Tony
There ya go, that'll be ideal for a first gun. Then get into a hut somewhere with a group of hunters who all have the best calibre , listen, sift through the bullshit and save up.
Good luck,
Tony
its a 303?
So had a look in the shop today as i'm expecting my license in the mail soon, Was looking at a howa 308. bolt or a 30-30 marlin lever action, would these be a good choice?
Yeah, i would imagine the 308 would be a better round for longer distances but i keep being told most of the time my shots will be under 250 yards at the most, I'm really no expert at all i'm just starting out, Never taken a deer before.
I was liking the 30-30 because i'd imagine it would be great fun on the range as well and i'm not a big fan of synthetic stocks, love the wood and metal feel. :) I'm pretty stuck!
