Personally. 30-30 lever action are just fine for John Wayne lookalikes or pig hunting. :)
If you want to be sure that that the deer in your sights is going to fall over dead, at any range you are comfortable shooting at, don't get a 30-30.

Haha I might suit the cowboy look! :)
But personally I just want a good all rounder, Something cheap to shoot and will humanely take anything at a realistic range, I'm no Simo Hayha!
GET THE HOWA!
Then when you feel like it you can uprade the stock to whatever.
The Japanese make good rifles out of good steel. A Howa in calibre of choice will, as a rule, make an excellent hunting rifle.
Check out howas with walnut stocks. I quite like them nice looking stocks and nice wood.
I think outdoors supplies have them check out their website
Yeah as I said i'm really not a fan of the look and feel of synthetic stocks, I know it might sound silly but thats the main thing putting me off it.. They feel cheap to me even though i know its strong material, If I can find one with a good wooden stock with a nice oil finish i'd be sold. Just curious, Why would the 30-30 be a bad choice? They look pretty similar apart from the 308 being slightly larger and the 30-30 being a flat nosed bullet due to the tube magazine, I just love the look and feel of the marlin as it is, But as I said I'd want a great all rounder. Thanks so much for all the info you guys are giving me, You lads are awesome! :)
You no longer have to use flat nose in the old 30-30. The new Hornady leverlution amo has changed all that, and improved the cals performance as well. But it is still regarded as very much a bush/short distance tool.
243 or 308 would be much better all rounders
Get a wooden Zastava then if the Howa walnut ones are to dear, or as the guys say plenty of Parker Hales about for a good price., cheap enough, should shoot ok
