    New rifle blooded

Finally blooded my recent purchase the only downside , it wasn't me that blooded it still , I didn't loose tooo much sleep over it anyway id been wanting to take a good friend of mine & his boy for a hunt my mate is limited on how much walking he can do these days so I teed up a private block that by rumour is seething with deer , so we headed out yesterday arvo into a cold southerly with light drizzle on & off cruzing along the main track stopping on the vantage points and scanning for game we had covered a good few k,s and seen ZERO not what I was expecting on we went reaching the outer reaches of the property and nathen excitedly points out 2 deer running across an open face so we parked up and watched them disappear , gave it 30 minutes and quietly walked around looking into the next gully unfortunately the wind was at our backs & there wasn't a lot we could do about it so 4 fallow deer were onto us straight away even though they were around 800 meters away they took off and didn't stop once for a second look..this was not how I envisaged things ! whilst it was private land the farmer is a keen hunter him self so I should have known better than thinking it would be a stroll in the park as the evening wore on a couple more deer were seen at distance but like the rest of them very flighty and offered no opportunity for a stalk so heading for home I pulled over and had a look behind us up a little side gully and bingo I could see 2 heads moving along a small rise , quick plan hatched nathen grabbed the 223 and me the 22-250 we quietly stalked upto the rise spotting another deer jumping the fence but unalarmed we got to the top & they had gone quietly we stalked expecting to see them , sure enough they leapt out of a small depression nathen raised the 223 but at 80 meters and no rest it he wasn't confident so didn't shoot , we watched them cross a scrub gully then they poped out the other side 1 stopped just in view quickly I put my pac down & gave him the 22-250 at around 250M I was a little hesitant but seen as how I gave him shooting practice a couple of days prior with both rifles I told him to aim dead centre in the chest aim slightly high and gently squeeze the trigger , crack went the 250 and the deer bolted , the boy (13) fearing the worst he,s missed and me fearing it was wounded as id heard the bullet hit watched as they took off...but only for 20 meters that big hind got wobbley and tipped over !! the boy couldn't believe he had shot his first deer
