Newbie hunter funding ex GOVT.
-
This is a good start.Giving the Industry the reins to try some moves rather than some Govt minister with an agenda stuffing our precious sport/way of life.
-
Sounds like good news for once?
-
thats hilarious.....and its not the FIRST TIME its happened.
anybody remember a fella named Rex Forrester????
back in the day,the tracks and hut network was put in with govt/taxpayer $$$$ to encourage people to use the outdoors,be it tramping or hunting.
Rex was one of the first if not the first modern hunting guide with al lthe trimmings/trappings...the gloss n glamore to encourage overseas hunters in bigger numbers.
the mountain safety council and deerstalkers have always encouraged folks out to hunt......
look at any old MSC manual.....and new groups come up with helpful info and are basically reinventing wheel, its all there in black n white and has been for 60 or more years.
but great idea....will see how it pans out.
-
Finally something positive for hunters to come out of the govt.
That said I won't start jumping for joy just yet....
Who knows what may be lurking in behind closed doors to be dropped on us in the future ....
-
-
yes sounds good at the moment but cant help thinking there must be a catch somewhere?

Maybe a fine if you let one go?
-
More and easier access to some places might get more hunters out there keeping numbers down.
-
There used to be a hunting training course for those on the dole back in the late 90's(?). Ran into a mod of them while deer stalking in the middle of the Kaweka's.
-
-
think they said it will provide 14 jobs? (trainers i guess) ....... will they be sourced from mongrel mob ranks?
call me cynical but all i can think of is someone waving a carrot whilst they have a dirty great stick behind their back
-
Smart move, get lots more people into hunting, then sit back and watch the GST roll in from all the rifles, clothing, reloading gear, binos, utes, etc they buy
-
Why so many cynics????
If nothing else, it legitimises recreational hunting to the public. The Govt are saying "recreational hunting is a good thing and should be encouraged".
The programs that have run in the past are in a different time and a very different political landscape. @Micky Duck. I am sure Rex Forrester could have slung his rifle over his shoulder and walked into parliament to ask for money. We live in a different world now.
With the govt doing so many other stupid things, I for one am not going to poo poo a minister that is saying recreational hunting should be encouraged and they are willing to help fund it.

I dought joe public is going to join at all with the firearms lic waiting times and conditions. Its obviously young fellas who are all ready to go just need some guidance from nzda to get into it.
I think its only a tokin gesture but im glad NZDA is getting some funding but i think if they wanted to do something that will have results improve access its beyond frustrating going down a
paper road and hitting a private land/gate bullshit when there is suppose to be public access.

Hats off to NZDA and the Game Council.
This is an initiative for our times and in a quite different context to anything in the past.
Supported by Gov
Putting our sport in front of the public
Introducing new hunters
Hunters as conservationists
Attracting metros to clean/green product and our way of life
Legitimising gun ownership
Will highlight new license application problems
Might open up more DOC access
Its easy not to be cynical. You just need to step back.

I guess that's a rhetoric question?? :) (I had edited my post at the same time as you responded)
No, nothing wrong with a healthy cynicism. But Im suggesting that its also ok to step back and see the good in something. I see a lot of good in this and I also know that the people who initiated/negotiated this are smart.

It's all good to criticise the things that govt do that you don't like or agree with (I do it all the time) but why be critical when they actually do something worthwhile?? Makes it look like people are just impossible to please whiners.

I don't think they're dumb. But I know 'a leopard never changes it's spots', just it's technique

If it's a paper road then you are 100% within your rights to walk on that road to get access to the public land.

Yeah i get that but its the locked gates on roads that gets me
