Thread: Newbie keen for a hunt in the Waikato area

Hi all,

Im a newbie to this site.I'm keen to get started hunting,ive just got my gun licence and a new .22.I'm keen to start hunting,anyone in the Waikato area that knows where any good spots to hunt goat,turkey,pigs rabbit,possums etc or anyone that has private land that is ok to hunt on.

Also keen to meet new hunters if anyone is keen to meet up and go for a hunt.

Welcome wiserKid. Be sure to tag along with someone who hunts a bit first to get some basic safety and hunting skills. Guys who have no or little experience in the bush etc are prone to getting lost or making bad calls. Enjoy the out doors and have a bit of respect for it and you'll come home with a feed over time.

+1 for the NZDA on the whole a bunch of great guys who will give you the shirt off their back.

As for hunting, a .22 rimfire is not permitted on DoC land and some would argue is not an ethical larger game killing rifle. So I would suggest heading around the local farmers. Go door knocking after the morning milking and explain your situation and that you are wanting to learn. Alot of farmers do their own pest control but some may be willing to let you tag along. The worst they can say is no and then just thank them for there time and move on to the next farm and hope for better luck!

Biggest piece of advice I was told when learning to hunt is be patient and take your time!!

Hey mate. Where bouts in the waikato are u? I got out every few weeks rabbit nd hare shooting on a farm. Ur welcome to come along if ur keen. Im in hamilton but the farm is in te aroha.

Hey Buck Shot how is Te Tuhi compared to Thompsons?
I had a walk up Thompsons this weekend and nothing kicking about until the first logging skid.
Just wondering if the track is similar condition to Thompsons?
