Ngamoko Hut Working Bee - 21st March - 23rd March

    Gidday,

5 of us flying in to Ngamoko Hut this Friday morning for the weekend to carry out some re-piling of the hut, shifting the dunnie and digging a big arse hole for it.

Just in case anyone intending on heading in. Hut sleeps 6.

I’ll take a fly in just in case anyone else beats us to it.

I’m sure we’ll be fine. I doubt they’ll be hunting roaring stags lying in bed.

Ah got ya. I was about to chuck some extra spades in haha put them to work.
Would be cool if they are cranked right up when we get in. Praying for good digging!!
You can thank the local tramping club for keeping this hut going. I’m just going in to provide a bit of muscle and be the slave on the end of a spade haha I

If I’m honest, I’d rather shoot a couple hinds, leave the stags for someone else. Good kai over antlers any day.

Waited most of the day for the clag to lift at the Pohangina DOC Base Camp. Ended up cancelling the trip as would’ve been a little dodgy getting in and Sunday forecast had changed to a lot more wind also. Bit of a bugger but no one has booked landing site for next weekend so we may be able to get in then. Either that or after the roar in May.

Interesting chatting to the pilot while we waited for weather, he reckons the deer concentration in the Pohangina area is the highest in the Ruahines and the forest is not in good shape. They spend a fair bit of time in there doing wilding pine and old man’s beard work.

He said the average carcass weight from the WARO in the area last year was 35kg. If you’re heading in that direction, probably worth shooting everything you see

I was in the ruahines south of the Pohangina on sat 22nd and had a helicopter fly over me several times which i thought was strange for that area.
And as for the Pohangina, its suffered from access issues in recent years so hasn't had the hunting pressure it used to get .
It used to be one of my favourite spots both for day hunts and longer trips as well, its a large area and even during the roar i don't recall having any problems keeping away from other hunters.
When Kevin Billet (RIP) had the farm where the main access was it was virtually open access all year except for during lambing season, and i don't remember any issues the more recent owners seem to have had with dickheads going where they shouldn't poaching private land , leaving rubbish and even vandalising diggers etc.
I am starting to ramble on a bit reminiscing LOL so ill leave it there!!

Not sure what the chopper would’ve been on the Saturday. There was a crew doing the track around Mid-Po hut area but I don’t think they flying out then.
