@Nathan F - really. There are too many things that you can't control at that distance. Flight time alone is enough that a step by the deer could have resulted in a wound.
A second shooter on hand, ready with an instant follow up shot is commonplace - albeit to keep the hunter safe - when hunting things that can bite back. Also, if the area is accessible to drive to where the animal last stood to track it... I'm sure you get the idea.
If it was me, I'd make sure there was a plan to dispatch the animal cleanly. A great trophy to be sure, and one Scott can be proud of!
