North Island DOC land
Hi guys, I'm new to NZHS. I've been waterfowl hunting for a few years now but really want to hunt for my first deer (any type).
I have looked at the all the DOC land listed for Northland and Central North Island. I'm quite over whelmed with all the different options.
Could someone please point me in the right direction in regards to some of these hunting blocks? I'm not looking for specific areas in the blocks but
rather the names of the blocks that are worth the trip. I am located in West Auckland but am more than happy to drive 3-4+hours to give it a crack.
I've committed and bought a Tikka T3x chambered in 7mm-08 :). Also keen to shoot goats/pigs too.
Cheers guys

My advice would be to pick one area and keep going back, you will learn the good areas to stalk and which areas hold animals. Clements is great for access and deer numbers bit the animals close to the road can be tricky. Get and hour or so back either via Te Iringa or the end of the road. Make sure you know how to navigate, there is still a place for a map and compass in this world of gps devices.
Also joint the NZDA and do the hunts course and go on some organized hunts.

Clement’s mill road and into Sika country. If you can’t be bothered with a tent or sleeping in your wagon then grab a bed at Sika Lodge. It’s a brilliant base for day trips. I’m really new to deer too but love Clement’s. Easy access and plenty of animals in there, great area and species to learn how to be quiet in the bush.
