Hi,

"Shot hunter was soldier"

A man shot in a hunting accident in Central Hawke's Bay today was a soldier at Linton Military Camp.

The 25-year-old man was hunting with two Army friends and a dog in the Ruahine Ranges this morning when he was accidentally shot by another hunter, who was not part of his hunting party.

The dead man's name will not be released until all family have been notified.

Police are currently speaking with the man who was involved in the shooting and one of the dead man's hunting companions who walked out of the bush with an injured dog.

The dog was injured in the shooting but is believed to be still alive.

The other member of the man's hunting party remains at the scene with the dead man.

Police say the body will remain in the bush overnight.

A scene examination is currently underway.

No further information will be available until tomorrow.

With the duck seasons around the corner, I fear we will read this again.... We must talk openly and honestly with the people we hunt/ shoot with. I have seen young blokes and old blokes rush ahead of me to get the shot on a rabbit or jump a pond for fucks sake it about the company and the pleasure of the hunt not having the biggest tally , biggest head,it's time park up our egos and respect the fact that with firearms we have to get it 100% right every single time.

My life is in your hands and yours in mine. It is time to take the heat out of hunting , were thinking its a deer I want / need to get a deer.

We need to be thinking is it a person.. It's the roar there will be people everywhere! they have electronic roarers etc ..If I miss out on an animal thats ok. I need to be sure!

The same with bird hunting. Clear your gun, don't trust the saftey, let the duck get away there will be more tomorrow and choose who you hunt with.

Set rules and stick with them ...your mate will be terribly sorry but you may be terribly dead.

Don't know what the latest figures are for hunters being shot while wearing " Blaze" but a few years ago they were quite high, even though this was kept out of the public arena.

Horrible news, good on his other mate staying with him, would be absolute shit leaving your mate dead alone in the bush. Agree whole heartedly with @stingray and am looking for a blue vest for my dog....

From memory the American stats I saw a couple of years ago said blaze made no meaningful difference to the risk of being shot. Good for helping SAR find injured people though I guess.

I don't know if this incident involved the victim wearing blaze orange or not, but in my opinion it's dangerous in the bush. I won't wear it. Blue on other hand sticks out like dogs balls and cannot be mistaken.

Really feel for the family and his hunting mates.
This shouldn't be the kind of thing "that can happen to anyone..."
To excuse the shooter is a cop-out: there are seven rules for a reason, to forget or disregard any of the 7 (very basic) rules renders you unfit to handle any firearm.
Details of how this happened will hopefully come out, but will they be helpful? We can all see one of the rules have been disregarded and there are no excuses.
Manslaughter should be the only charge - careless use of a firearm causing death trivializes what has happened.

Another need less shooting death .Do any of you think that with the huge increase in people hunting in new Zealand has any thing to do with all the hunting shows now on tv and you tube. most of them make it look real easy as do a lot of the magazines .They don't show you all the empty handed hunts an how hard hunting can truly be. People watch and read this stuff head out into the bush thinking that every trip ends in success .A lot of peer pressure big money outlays. So have some people developed the mind set that every time they go out they are going to get a animal or should it be iam going hunting cool hopefully I might get some thing and wait iam not at home or working how good is this and if I get a animal what a bonus

This is a tragedy, no other way of looking at it.

In my humble opinion, the first step to prevent this from happening is admitting that it very well could happen to you, we're all human and all make mistakes, but best to learn from other people's.

We are all vulnerable to seeing what we want to see and tunnel vision, also known as the red mist. It's something that we need to identify as it is happening and try and control. I have a few tricks I use in heated situations to control my heart rate and maintain situational awareness, but they don't always work.

Harsh penalties won't do anybody any good
