There does seem to be an awful lot of that sort of carry on between us hunters doesnt there? Same goes for guys bagging other guys about shooting velvet stags.....
I bought one issue of NZ Outdoor Hunting becuase they were running a competition I thought i might like to enter, but after the date of the competition being "drawn" and not seeing the names of any winners in the issue where they had supposed to have been announced I emailed them to enquire and recieved no reply, seems like it was just a bit of a have to get people to buy the magazine.
Obviously rhe guys that produce it are fellow hunters and maybe some constructive feedback to the editor would be welcomed by them?

I buy Rod and Rifle and NZ Hunter, both have knowledgeable editors and some good articles. I'm going to write some articles for R&R too, if they'll publish them!

Is this the one dougie writes for?

Hunting mags are ok I reckon end of the day you don't have to buy them but they do pass some time. If you are a "done it all no it all" hunter then obviously you are going to be disappointed.

I buy lots of them. I buy hunting books. I love reading that shit - not all of it obviously, but I just filter the shit and get out of it what I can. I used to write articles for NZ Outdoor (standard has gone down since I stopped LOL). I guess it must be bloody tough getting good quality material for every article in every edition. I say just lighten up, and take it for what it is - entertainment.

I'll normally grab a magazine if I see something on the cover that interests me.

Or on occasion someone runs a series on the history of an area or the old boys that hunted it.

End of the day hunting and shooting is about getting out there and getting amongst it.

If an article motivates me to try a new area or build something cool I'm down with that.

I had some long flights last week so grabbed the latest NZ Hunter to read. I thought it was an excellent edition.
It drew my attention to the Tahr ballots, had a couple of interesting tests and Greg Gargou's article on light weight gear was excellent. There was also a nice story about the some of the Tahr blocks that I'm interested in. And to top it, some very useful information about using a GPS.

What's not to like?

But...I flicked through some others...mainly the NZ Outdoor and recoiled away. NZ Guns always looks ok.

The thing that I have disliked the most about some hunting magazines in recent years is the hype, bullshit and prima-donnas. Its a pathetic attempt at being like professional rugby :) Its laughable. The same is happening with hunting vids on You Tube.

I havent opened the latest issue that arrived in the post a week or so ago....says alot

Well, we had Connor McKenzie and a lady called Alice pop into our nzda tonight. Alice is tasty, and a former representative small bore shooter (speaking of good groups) and Connor was quite a classic, tells a good yarn, and has been places and done things which I'm sure 90% of us have only daydreamed about, so I'm certainly going to have a read of the mags they gave us (I don't know shit from chewed dates, so I'm bound to learn something..) Got 4 back issues, so I'll have a flick and bring them along to the Akl pub meet in a few days.

Connor's short stories were always worth reading. Lots of giggles through them.

bloody oath Kudu, have had two years subscription to NZ hunter and I look forward to it arriving, as someone said great for passing time on the dunny, also great to ear opinions on things and build the knowledge base, doesn't necessarily mean you take it as gospel.

When I was new to hunting I would lap up all the R&R mags I could find.
Every issue had an Air Charter Taupo add in it – drool
The stories were great, hunting tips and hints read 10x to remember. Great recipes to try but never did. It was like having a new bible each month. Now I’m older, wiser for that information and settled with my hunting where I want to be. Got all the gear I need and know what I want.
There is a lot of repetition. Product reviews on $2500 scopes etc that I cannot justify spending on for occasional bush hunting.
Won a pair of Garmont boots in a NZ Outdoor subscription. Good boots that I still have. Always read Connors Corner 1st after reading the contents to see what page it was on.

As Greg Duley said in his early days as an editor, you cannot write a bad review on rifles or you will not be given more to try. Advertising pays the bills

I do not read them much now as my hunting in the last 2 years has dropped off.

I am sure new hunters now a days are doing the same to the mags we now turn our noses up to.

I picked up the mag mainly for this article, and the rest of the mag is just a nice surprise of good reading.

So there is an untapped market for a "straight shooting" unbiased hunting magazine focused on receiving 95% of it's revenue from the consumer? Would you want monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly issues? Approx. price $19.00-$39.00 an issue? Would you buy it?

Yes there is that...but If one wanted to build a reputation on being ruthlessly honest there is a market.

There are some misconceptions about the writing of NZ outdoor articles, one in particular is about the gear reviews turning into advertisements.
It is not so much that products are supplied to magazine and that they then are obliged to write laudatory advertisements as 'reviews', although I suppose that might happen in NZ. It is more a case that only positive reviews get published. Most readers just don't want to read about bad reviews of gear.
There are also a lot of personal gear that gets reviewed as well, most of it probably, things that the writers pay for with their own money and think are worthwhile. If your writing about your own stuff, then you will be writing a positive piece also. You bought it yourself after all. By default it sort of ends up this way.

My pet problem, is that I personally hate reviews of gear. I hate writing them so I mostly don't, and I hate reading them. Hunting magazines nowadays have way too many gear reviews. Regardless of whether they are positive or not, the magazines just come across as catalogues. All of the current magazines are guilty of this. Maybe people all want to read 64 pages of gear reviews, interspersed with advertisements. Who knows, but I really don't.
The editor of NZ Guns and Hunting became aware of this a while back and to his credit has been trying to address the issue.

I would rather read hunting stories. Unfortunately writing compelling hunting stories is more difficult than it sounds, and a large part of these type of stories are supplied by contributors who are hunters, but not necessarily accomplished writers.
In other countries you have enough of a market that hunting writers can work steadily, provide quality work and magazines don't have to rely on what is essentially enthusiastic amateurs. Overseas, the downside of this is that these hunting writers are provided with hunts on private land so that they can provide enough of their talented material. Again, readers can get blasé about every article being a great trophy, all of it shot too easily behind probably fenced private country.

We mostly don't have that problem in NZ, but the kiwi hunting magazine equivalent of those kind of provided-for-reader-consumption-articles, is the gear review. Gear reviews are easy, you don't have to shoot anything necessarily so you don't have to depend on successful hunting trips to get articles out. That's another reason why there are so many of them I reckon. And when editors are relying on amateur writers for their hunting stories that may be of variable quality, you can rely on gear reviews from regular contributors. They are solid dependable bricks that reliably fill up space. Gear review are easy, and editors are convinced that readers love them.
Other magazines have come up with a lot of how-to articles. I am leery of them also. Yes, let's have some, but a certain newer magazine has way too many. Like one of those Ladies Home Companion digests from the Depression.

I may be getting older but I find the desperately original attempts on the part of a couple of magazines to generate eye catching layouts, with variable fonts and sizes, excitingly mixed bold and italic type, unexpected layouts around pictures and contrasting headline colours...so confusing visually that I have trouble figuring out which column of type are articles and which bits are some kind of advertisement, so I just keep turning the page until I see something I understand. Last magazine of theirs I tried I ended up paging right out of pages. Couldn't stop.

Unfortunately story lengths have been reduced lately - probably so more gear reviews can be included.
