Oamaru private hut
Hi guys, pretty new to hunting and managed to fly into the oamaru private hut for the weekend. Had a great time but struggled to find deer, by Sunday I managed to find a few good spots heaps of fresh sign, I bush bashed and spooked a couple. Have booked to return next year just thought I would throw it out if any one had some experience or a point in the right direction on the best plan of attack on this block.

Probably better off(no cost)spending some time camped and hunt off Clement road mate.
-
Cheers mate that's the plan, get some kms under my feet and get out there walking.

There’s plenty in there but it gets thermalled really hard and now the little buggars are only out in the middle of the night.

Unfortunately the area has lost a couple of thousand deer. And it's continuing nearby on another large private area.
A old fav block of mine is now rubbish with far lower numbers.
OP gets loads of hunters much like the one I used to frequent but with lower numbers and thermalling, they're dismal. This time of year the tussock can be a bit hard too. Good if you get a week of rain. Otherwise it's the same for them as you. If you feel hot and bothered so do they.

Years ago we landed on the Oamaru strip to walk into East Creek, plane had to buzz deer off the strip so we could land.

Block i8s hunted all year round, what is still living there are well educated, late spring is easier when mother has kicked out last years young ones. Haven't been back since Air charter "lost" the operating rights.

Thanks for the info, appreciate it. Found no sign out in the open and definitely covered some kms. Seems like they were all hiding in the thick scrub.
I will do some more research and plan the next trip to have a crack at my first deer.
