    Ohakune???

It appears that I'm going to Ohakune for five days. Wife wants to go skiing. I don't like skiing. Should I take a rifle or fishing rod or both? I'll look at the usual stuff, Spot X, DOC maps etc, but any general information to get me started? Cheers.

I be keen to have a coffee or a beer with ya as working 2 minutes from town at the moment.
The river I live on has some mean fishing that I can set you alight on to.

Is there going to be any snow left after all this rain? Heaps of fish in the rivers round Turangi and consistently good condition and size this year.

MB watch those yokels don't send you fishing up some river that is closed for the winter.
    I'd be taking a rifle.
    Stop it!
Open all year below the main bridge they reckon

Definitely worth a look. Pick some DOC land near the road and go for a walk. This was about 10 minutes drive from Ohakune township. Didn't catch up with them after the snow stopped, but I wasn't far off.

Definitely take a rifle. Pm me and I am happy to send you in the right(apparently) direction unless you get an offer to hunt private. Man there is heaps on private land around there

Just got back. Thanks again for the tips. Did two half day tramps with a rifle based on areas recommended to me by PM. Saw lots of pig, goat and deer sign, but saw no animals. No doubt, there are a huge number of animals in the area. Had a fairly half-hearted attempt at fishing to no avail. Unfortunately, trip cut short as my 7 year old boy made a snowman (actually more of an iceman), then proceeded to punch it's head off, breaking two bones in his hand!
