    Ohakune hunting

    Hey Team,

My family and I are down in Ohakune till Friday this week (15 - 19) and I want to take the two eldest boys out for a hunt if possible.
I've been out to the public land near Horopito and am planning on taking the boys there for a walk.
Just wondering if any of you have any advice on where I can try around Ohakune.

    Thanks in advance
    Nick

Head across towards the timber mill over towards Waiouru. get to Karioi then head North into the Nat park on the gravel roads there. Take the track that heads towards spot height 696. Check out the legal accessways on WAMS, in case you bump into someone that thinks they know more than than the Governments Walking Access Commission.

    Hahaha, snap.

This is exactly what I was just going to write. Turn left just over the railway line, drive west through the wriggly bit then north along the long straight. Park on the slight right hand bend at end of first straight and hunt towards the stream to the west.
Take a compass, it's flat and disorientating. Don't ask how I know this.

Go west down a long winding road, stop at where the bush meets the road and walk along the ridge in the tall manuka sussing out the clearings. Then look over the steep face down into some nice large clearings but need to make sure you take the right spur down onto those deer magnets, a GPS would help but I've never needed one as I've never been lost, just disoriented, how do you tell if you're disoriented, you come back across your own boot prints, lol

Or up Mt Road to the Massey ski club building (big "A" frame on the right) and hunt the bush edge around to Blyth hut and beyond. If the weather permits of course.

This area got 1080 not all that long ago. Not sure what that did to the deer population though .

anywhere beyond the 4km mark on the mt road was always not too bad. Or go up the Rangataua rd, climb up a few hundred m and hunt back off of it toward the Karioi boundary. I used to do well in the 100m of contour under Mangaehuehu in the winter, but it was always a bit of a hike.

Weather's a bit average here ATM. Hihitahi well worth a look, occasionally pick one up on the slip near the hut or once up top head to the fringe country of the winds ok.

Rangataua is average from my experience.

Erua is OK, good access along some of the pylon tracks.

When my family were skiing, I went for a little day hunt in the area. Heard a goat in the Erua and saw lots of sign of all kinds. Couldn't help myself, went somewhere with goats. Always a good backup, but even failed at that on the day in question!
