anywhere beyond the 4km mark on the mt road was always not too bad. Or go up the Rangataua rd, climb up a few hundred m and hunt back off of it toward the Karioi boundary. I used to do well in the 100m of contour under Mangaehuehu in the winter, but it was always a bit of a hike.
