    Ohakune surrounds

Hey guys. I am coming up to ohakune in couple of weeks just for 3 nights. Really keen to get the old man out on his first ever hunt. Hes quite keen but we dont have a lot of time up our sleeves.

Really will only have time for a quick early morning hunt one day returning early afternoon. Was just wondering if anyone could recommend a spot where we could walk an hour or 2 and have a semi reasonable chance of seeing a deer.

Would really appreciate any advice anyone feels like giving.

    Cheers guys

Of course, If people have a semireasonable place only 1 - 2 hr from the road they might not be in a hurry to post it on the internet. Best to look for a place thats a nice interesting walk and within your fitness capabilities and weather on the day.

Check the DoC site for poison map and phone the Ohakune visitor centre to see just whether it has actuallly been dropped yet. They were planning to do a big area on east Ruapehu.

Also check DoC maps site and WAMS for boundaries as some obvious spots are private land or army.

Hey wanakahunter, I lived in ohakune for quite a few years and there are plenty of really handy hunting spots within 10-20 min from there, head up the mountain road and hunt above the water catchment on the left hand side, or head out to rangataua forest, access it from the Karioi Station road, hang a left then up the hill and follow your nose, anywhere along there on the right hand side is worth a poke around, have shot plenty of animals in both spots, go for a drive and have a look

Correction: 1080 planned for south and west ruapehu. But according to the ospri site its all below the mangaturuturu hut . Sounds like a great place to go !
