Okui Hut

Hi Everyone.
I'm planning on heading in to Okui hut next week.
I'm not from the area, and I've never been there before, so I have a couple of questions, I'm hoping someone here can help with.

1. Are you able to drive a 4wd from Te Whaiti Road along the Whirinaki river? Or is it a walk from the start?
2. If I can't drive some of the way, what does the forum suggest I do with my car? Doc suggested catching a shuttle from Minginui.

Last time I looked was pretty rough track, wouldn't take a truck I valued along there. Also no way I'd leave a vehicle on the side of the rd there. Apparently that hut is popular with locals for parties when they access with there bush trucks (this is hearsay I have no direct experience) If I was you od look at using the shuttle service and walking a few hours to one of the many whirinaki huts. Good luck!

There are vehicles often getting broken into in that area. The track was always really rough from what I've been told, motorcycle, quad or extremely well setup 4x4 only. You can get dropped off and leave your car at Jailhouse shuttle's at minginui 073663235.

As others have said the roads a no go if you like your vehicle, last time I looked the climb out of the river right at the start of the track was pretty gnarly. There are afew rusa as well as reds in there

I think some guy lost his 4wd trying to cross the river to get to the hut.
