That's the one  I really liked the bit the other week where the man had died while falling down an ice slip and the rescuer kept talking to him, telling him what was happening, how far they were to landing etc. Such a top bloke. Really makes you proud of our rescue teams out there, good on him. Thoughts go out to that family, I bet they were happy to see how their son/mate was treated though.
Ok since the other thread is relegated to those under 30 there is no other category for me so being a semi old fart I will have to post in here I'm 39
You can't hold an oldie down for long...

Well done Tahr, with busted wing and all. That hind is missing a back wheel in the second photo.
Jeez Tahr busted arm as well. Good skills
Bumpity bump....here we are and still doinit lol.
The sixties ages have gone people and yes, some of us older types are........fingers crossed, still here eh.
Now we are in our 70's plus, next one if it gets here = 74yrs.
Slowing up a tad in the climbing department, still puff my arse off when carrying a weight although I tend to find younger critters are the flavour of the day.Whole as in an eater goat, boned out and only the goodies if anything bigger lol. I still walk or should I say hobble at times, don't use a quad or any other means as I hunt (armed tramp) on foot on public ..DOC only, well 98 percent of the time at least.
I try to get out into the scrub at least 2-3 days a wk depending of course on weather although I do favour misty rain best.
It's all about putting meat into the freezer for me and has been for decades.
Anyway guys and girls just thought I'd dribble a tad and see how us old types are hanging in on the hunting scene,,,feel free to throw whatever you wish...yeah it's raining .....again, but it's great, tiz the Coast eh :)
74 coming up, still get out there regular, given up carrying carcasses 3 years ago after stuffed disc and broken Achilles tendon. Hunted Pureora for last 16 years regular but next month will be the end of travelling there with coming 1080 drop. Lucky to have Fallow and odd red thru the back fence.
Good effort 74,keep going mate. You never know whats around the corner.
Well done gentlemen. I have a mate 78yrs young. His lungs are not what they used to be from asbestos dust. He still comes out (private block) and glasses from the 4x4... and then watches the hunter move in and dispatch the Deer.... He then drives as close to the kill to aid in its recovery. He's a gun with a knife being an ex professional meat hunter.
A great bloke doing what he can with what hes got..... once a hunter always a hunter. The joy in his smile and measured excitement in his voice never gets old...... team up and share the experience....he's taught me soooo much about hunting.....like Slow down
I’m 70. Got my last stag down south during Easter. Luckily we could drive right to him as I’ve had spinal fusion and the back hates heavy loads. Interestingly my hunting mate asked me how I felt after that animal dropped. My response was “nothing”; it was a clean kill and we had plenty of meat. Perhaps I’ve become too clinical.
Moving toward 76. Next trip is planned for October. All local areas are poisoned though so I enjoy experimenting with loads and rifles at the range along with hunting wildfowl. My dog is great company.
Sixty eight now and to my surprise I out walked a much younger man around the hills on Thursday. That says more about how unfit he was than anything else though.
With a belly full of your nectar fuel you were probably jet propelled @Rushy.
I am 64 and still go hunting whenever work and weather allows but agree with Tahrs earlier comments that your fitness doesn't last long , and is a constant battle to keep it up.
There is a term for people that enjoy inflicting pain on themselves LOL but i still enjoy heading off into the Ruahines with a full pack for a walkabout somewhere, but not to worried about actually shooting a deer these days, just enjoy being out in the hills and often using my camera instead of a rifle.
Cheers
When you hit the 70"s bits seem to come undone which didn't happen in the 60's. Could hunt 5-6 day's a week then, not now.
Wallaby's are the perfect game animal for us old blokes.
Plenty of targets and dont have to carry them.
Really nice to know that there are older members out there still capable,,clocking up the ks as ti speak whether it be on foot or vehicle. May it last guys and to be honest me myself and I will not cope when that day arrives..no more hunting for you ol chap. Yuk....
As you get a little slower you learn to savour the experiences that you can occaisionally enjoy outdoors. Like not gulping down great whiskey, just really enjoy sipping.
Get lots a video and pictures..... "Then" when your older and stuck in bed.... you can play them and watch how good you used too be. Share with any grandlings and mates you went out with.... Salt in wounds some may think.... But memories from the past are priceless.... I have video of good mates who've passed and sometimes it's good to remember how cool they were and How Blessed & lucky I,ve been to have had such great friends.... Get going and Doing it out there..........Come....on Rattle ya dags before ya too olde..........Attachment 171123Attachment 171124
73 soon. Still loving it. Get out most weeks. Have to do some work-arounds to accomodate the old bod but can still do most things in moderation.
You get used to enduring a bit of pain and inconveniences.
A new knee sometime would be nice.
Will be 70 in a few months - 63 years of NZ hunting and in earlier times comp shooting. VERY busy with shooting in last 15 years. Little quieter this year with declining varmint numbers in Cantab, but still happily outshoot these young fellas. Very few get away from either 12g or WMR.
My key is keep strong with 3x per week workouts at gym - stronger now than 20 years ago, and stronger than many youngsters coming in off the streets for first time. Then good nutrition. And of course good sharp shooting firearms to keep you challenged :)
Greetings All,
Turned 72 in April and for the last few months have been working on my fitness and mobility as previously reported. I think I am a bit fitter now than I was 20 years ago and definitely 25 kg lighter. Currently swading (walking in water) stretching and firewood gathering form the fitness program. Early spring will include some hunts in easy country suggested by a friend and an overnight trip or two as well. Fully retired I can pick my days so a few more bush walks or gentlemen's hunts (walking with rifle) should be on the cards in late winter.
Regards Grandpamac.
I'm 66. Now mostly just get out for rabbits and hares with the Marlin model 60SS. Not particularly creaky, and no bung joints, but since I moved from Loburn to Ashvegas, don't seem to get the opportunity the same.
Marlin 60SS .. mmmmm nice! That is a sweet little semi.
Good. I do exercises with weights every day (2x5kg) - have been for the last 2 years. Keeps my upper body ok. I keep my hill fitness up by hunting in the hills. Last week I did 16km in 2 days including carrying a deer for a couple of KM, but that was over doing it and my knee is suffering now. Pills are my friends.
65 and my hunting now seems to involve longer and steeper walks than my younger days although a bit slower.
Love seeing animals and quite often don't worry about pulling the trigger
three weeks off 72 and still doing what I did when I was 40
75 in September: I no longer carry a full carcase out, but bone out the meat and take most of it. Still get a few back twinges from carrying a monster red hind (skinned) out of the Hopuruahine many moons ago.....I don't walk as far in as I used to, but walk quietly, slowly, and hunt smarter.
70 plus
Tahr must be to :)
heading away for a week in the Tararuas next week, got go for longer now, takes longer get there and back

My old man dirtying his wagon. Two nephew’s in tow.
He’s 74 now and still keener than useless young me.

Turned 60 last week. ''Hunt smarter, not harder.'' and as a whitetail hunters quote. ''You don't get fitter hunting Whitetails, you get fatter.''
Yep, 64 and out shootin at the weekend.....
71 this year.
Still getting out chasing pigs with the dogs etc. once a week.
A bit slower than the young ones getting to the bail .
Carried a hind out the other day (100m to the truck) haha., legend.
I Have 100 traps in the kaimais which keep me busy when the weather is ok and am not working.
Fortunate to be in reasonable health an will keep hunting as long as I can.
