Orphan fawn
Hi everyone,
I've been directed to your forum on the off chance that someone might be able to help..........
I know it's a long shot, but we've been looking for an orphan fawn to hand rear this season. We're Taupo based but happy to travel a reasonable distance for one. I know beggars can't be choosers but preference would be for a hind fawn. :)
I've contacted the local Landcorp deer unit, a few smaller breeders around the greater Taupo area & the local vet who does all the deer work, but no luck so far. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
:)

Jaws I will keep that in mind. I had one from a breeched birth I intervened in about three weeks ago but it didn't make it. Fawning is not over yet though.

welcome JAWS would be interested to know how you get on with your request? wounder why you would like a fawn? what age would a young one be at this time would it still be on its mothers milk?

Yeh sorry Jaws, I forgot to say welcome to you. GJ, the first fawns on my place arrived about three weeks back but the hinds are still fawning as I had one walking the fence line last night. Orphan fawns can be brought up on Anlamb (or an equivilent) and any that are taken from their mothers too early will also survive on this. I have two deer on my property that were orphans. One a young spiker from last year and another that is a hind from about ten years back. They are actually a pain in the arse because they do not react like the rest of the herd and can cause a great deal of confusion to the herd when you are trying to shift them (as they just want to come up and say hi when the instict of the others is to run away). Jaws it is a valid question that GJ asks as although they are cute when they are young and following you around, they can also be quite dangerous to children when they become adult as the instinct of a hind is to establish their position in the herd by domination and they will lash out with their front hooves and beat up on anything that they consider to be of lesser status to themselves.

Rushy has had his ass handed to him a fair few times by his old girl. Why do you want a wee Bambina? Gonna eat it later?

You are right about that Dougie. Bent over with a chainsaw in hand the last time. Was bloody tempered to give it to her Texas massacre style.
