    Otorohanga

I’m heading up to Otorohanga next week to stay with my uncle and am wondering if it’s worth a non bush hobbit south islander taking a rifle. Never hunted in the north island before. Will be up there for roughly a week.
    Any advice appreciated.

Puroera is right there so worth a look and you don't know if you don't try. If you have 4wd you could drive into wildlife hut for a nosey.

Yeah, take a rifle. Plenty of acess points to Pureora, North and South blocks. Just, be careful, that Bush can fcuk you up. GPS and compass recommended.

    ....speaking from experience...

Definitely! Pureora is beautiful to be in, though thick with supple jack. Love it in there. Even if you don't see deer I'm sure you'll still enjoy it. Although - as mentioned, take good navigation gear.

@Dreamer as others have said, the Pureora north and south blocks are handy to Oto and are well worth a look

If you had more time up your sleeve I’d also recommend a mission down to the Kaimanawas, sika are a must if you’re in the north island for any decent length of time. But it’s a good couple hours from Oto so you may not have the time to squeeze in a trip that’s a bit further afield

I had a quick look in the north block over the weekend and she's pretty hairy with the supple jack, nice jungle though. Definitely worth door knocking a few places that have bush adjacent too.

It looks like they're getting the green rain in the Pureora's starting from August so knock over as much as you can while you're in there.
