    Ouch

    Found this.

Tilly was winding so I snuck around the hill and popped my head over a side spur. I could see its head and shoulder, and not suspecting anything was wrong, shot it in the shoulder at about 20 yards.

Was very much alive and was standing when I shot it

It had a healed broken front shoulder so likely why it didn't clear the fence. And looking at its head the poor thing had had a tough life.

Make no mistake, you did the poor thing a favor - that would be a horrible ending if left to it's ultimate conclusion.

Ha ha. That has been suggested.

I walked 17km over the last 2 days. Saw 18, and that's the only one I shot.

    Had a great time though.

Ive seen several Fallow do that over the years but that's the first Red.

It seems that Fallow tuck their legs forward when they jump and get caught, where-as Reds trail their legs more so are not so vulnerable.

Yup, fallow are terrible for getting stuck in fences. I've got a few photos of ones I've found like that.

Old work mate had a pic of a stag he was tracking up the Taipo valley back about 93-94. Knew it was there in the first trip and was also told about it by another hunter coming out.
Found it dead next trip in not many weeks later. Good size animal with small antlers, back leg caught in single loop of bush loire. Stretched right out with a large patch of scrub beaten down and ground all muddy. couple of steps backwards would've been free as.

The most recent one I've come across. Fresh as. Poor bastard. I wonder what actually kills them in the end?

Terrible way to end your days alright, unfortunately it happens quite often in farming areas.

terrible way to go...my son shot red hind in same way a few years back with 22lr....carried it back to house and his Aunty went off her rocker at him for shooting a deer without permission...LUCKILY he had head screwed on right way and had videoed it first on camera.....shut her up quick smartly.
Ive seen deer get caught and then get out....tell you one thing, when your dog does it on electric fence, you got to be VERY carefull getting them out, bite like a bastard and you getting zapped to boot.....poor buggers cant help themselves and lash out in pain.

Wow, thats actually very sad to see @Flyblown I can't think of a better way to say it. It would have been painful and no doubt a slow death. I'm guessing a bunch of contributing factors like dehydration and starvation to exhaustion and whatever condition comes from inversion for an extended period.

Remember those two crazy cockies down south who found two stags locked up in a fence, and were videoed manhandling them out until they were free? 3 or 4 years ago I'm guessing. Mad as hatters.
