So I mentioned above that Friday could be the go but unfortunately I had to cancel due to an emergency ...the bait where running with the new moon and seen as how they can stop just as quick I selfishly scratched , so the next best day was monday , Mac was chomping at the bit to slay something in de boosh with his new 6.5 creed more, so arraigned a 5.30 start which as it turns out was just late enough as its pretty light now at 6, so on the way in on a previous trip I had some deer run off in front of the truck not wanting to be caught out a second time we where more prepared but after cruzing through the more promising country I said to mac "bloody typical if the gun was on the back seat and bolt in the glove box we would have seen a deer" as we rounded a bend ooo there is 4 running away !!! but they where to quick & disappeared into the scrub so we carried on past a point where the track gets quite bumpy it was well light by this stage when I glanced over a small gut to see a deer watching us on the edge of a clearing mac got the x hairs on it but it bounded into the bush & just as quick as it disappeared it reappeared at the shot it was poleaxed & no wonder it was a great shot straight through its neck at 80M & the bonus I backed the truck rite upto it !!

so it was 6.30 still early enough to catch something out in the open we parked the truck up & quietly wondered along up a ridge spotting a couple of stags one looked quite dark & mature so opted to leave them as given the chance I prefer to shoot hinds so we carried on along the ridge pushing through monkey scrub / tussock & manuka at one stage we heard an animal crash off & then the fog came in & we could only see 80 odd meters but I wanted to get closer to a nice face & park up to glass not long after we spotted a spiker mac ranged it at 450m so ducking down we closed the gap to 250 but by the time we had done this he had moved off then I spotted him moving along a game trail , with no decent rest I fingered id see how much mac trusts me ...pisst mac stand here so using his shoulder as a rest ( he was steady to) I lined up aiming a fraction high with the 308, crack I heard the wallop he ran 10 meters & toppled over , wicked so we both scored a choice meat animal & one of the better labour days iv had .
Also on the way in (still semi dark ) mac mentioned it looked like snow on the hills as it turned out it clematis , the old saying is when the clematis comes out its a good time to hunt.
