I like mine and find it practical for some of the hunting I do.
No good sheathing your rifle in the bush or on steep descents.
Get one that has a zip at the muzzle end to empty shit out.
What brand is that one in your pic?
Looks to be a more useful size than mine.

They are great for giving you hands free in above the bushline hunting, ie climbing bluffs, steep areas when tahr hunting.
the brand is Eberlestock. They seem popular in the states... amazon have them for a decent price.
Ha! I have an eberlestock but it is 10 yrs older than that. Looks to be an improvement on mine.

The eberlestock packs are pretty heavy, most seem to be over 3kg...
Personally I cant see the benefit from a mobility point of view having a part of the rifle stick out below your butt. If I want my hands free I just secure the rifle on the side of my pack (but all my hunting rifles are fairly short to start with). Also a lot to be said for having the rifle in your hands as opposed to stuck in a pack...
I like mine, it is heavy compared to some but is nothing compared to the weight that goes in it and it's strong and comfortable.

I have a pack with a scabbard, honestly can't recall using it, so can't comment on that. I rarely even have a shoulder strap on my rifle. I carry it, or use it as a walking stick.
Remember you can't shoot an animal with your rifle in your pack or on your shoulder! And, they tend to pop up in the most unexpected places when you are doing so ;)

When hunting I very rarely even have a rifle strap on my rifle, no noise as it slaps the stock and I like carrying my rifle for the quick ones that stand up as you walk past them or spook them in front of you.
Might be encouraged to use one when hunting the tops but even then you can actually get pretty close to deer in a fold in the ground or a bit of cover.
I will use a strap when climbing to have 2 hands free, guess I can see the sense in having rifle on the back if you've got a deer in the bag already as well.
My 2c

I don't want or intend to shoot everything I see and generally know where and when I will bump into an animal as I will be hunting and not positioning.
If needed I can have the blaser out and fired as fast as most turn bolts carried at half ready anyway.
I don't carry my rifle in the scabbard when in tricky country or close country.
They are good for looking after you rifle if you are clumsy like me and ass up for no reason.

Agree with you there R93, I don't want or intend to shoot everything I see either, however I do want to give myself a chance of doing so If I choose and it is safe to do so...lol.
I mostly bush hunt so that probably makes me think the way I do. I have missed a couple of deer hunting fallow as I had the rifle over my shoulder and had it been in a scabbard can only think it would have been the same.
Bloody fallow don't give you much of a chance sometimes, the couple of times I missed the bloody freezer was empty as well.
Don't hunt the tops as much as the bush, but hunting bush edges and even in the open I have stumbled across deer pretty close, like 20-30 meters close. Guess I am just a quiet walker:ORLY:
I have no problem with people choosing to use a scabbard, I guess my point is if you are hunting then don't use it, at least I wouldn't anyway.
cheers

Be a complete waste of time in the bush, rifle in hand.
I use mine where i have a few hours walk of barren land before into hunting country.
I managed to follow Adam thru some South Westland bush for a day with my rifle in the scabbard without to much drama.
Supple jack gets you no matter what but once your thru it's line your away laughin

thanks for the input chaps... on balance I think I will give it a miss and just try to find a decent sized narrow daypack.
Iv got an older eberlstock as well. Its handy at times, the walk out with a pack full of meat, handy on motorbikes and pushbikes as well.
I like the idea of a scrabbard, but not sure I would use it enough to justify another pack. I have an early Hunters Element pack that rifle can be attached too, and the empty pack only weights 1.2kg
I've hunted with a couple of mates with these eberlestock pack, but really see them used to carry a rifle. If I did, it would be the X1E model for a daypack at 2.4kg for a 32lt.
Trying to reduce the amount of gear I don't use at the moment, not buy more.
You don't shoot shit with the gun like that.
eberlestock packs are awesome very well made I have a j34 love it
I can see it being really useful if you have a long walk back from a hut or something, I could have done with something like that walking the Umakarikari the other week, not something I'd use regularly though. @ebf how do you attach your rifle to your pack?
I've got 2 packs with a scabbard - both Markhors and I love it. Depending on where I'm hunting depends on whether I use it or not, but when climbing to the tops it's great, when walking out of somewhere with an animal already in the bag is great - I use mine all the time when I need/want hands free. I'm not sure I would want to have a scabbard where the rifle is barrel down though? - I'm a bit of a clumsy bugga and arse over every now and again and the odd occasion that I've had the bang stick in the scabbard it got a decent hit - I would hate for that to be the crown.
These packs are real nice to use. Very easy to load and unload rifle from scabbard.

Good idea re foam R93. Those vorn hunting packs look good, but I nearly fell off the sofa when I saw the friggin price!!
Had two of them gone now.
They are fantastic for carrying big guns in open country.
As others have said they are very heavy packs, but built very strong.
No fun in the bush with one on.

You cunts would be the sort to walk along with your rifles slinged. I like that. Easy animals for me.
Hey ebf off-topic but how loud is that pack? I got the Tatonka pack bag like that to go with my Lastenkraxe and it squeaks like forty bastards when it's loaded up, can hardly hear myself think when walking in. It only went quiet when it got heavily rained on. Any tips? I don't wanna biff it as the harness is so good, and it doesn't squeak by itself.
Ended up with one of these... good price and just the right size... seems well designed and is comfy. Hopefully get to try it out Easter weekend :)

I tend to carry my rifle unless its a long grunt and I don't intend to be hunting it.
Those huntsmart packs have a good idea in that rifle release. I see they are going to bring out a kit you can attach to another pack . Ive been wondering if I could make something myself along those lines using the release from a skydiving chute bag.
Proneshooter - would be curious to know how that goes in the field.
Damn, things are cheap as these days. People bitch about Chinese quality but compared to the old days there is so much choice now.
My hunters element pack has one, never used it. i always carry my rifle in the bush. Unless i was tramping into a hut over barren country cant see myself ever using one.Could be handy thou on the tops and more open country.
I was browsing the Hunters Element packs last night. Never used a rifle scabbard and am unlikely to, however, this looked like something I could add fairly easily to my own Huntech pack. Might help when climbing up and down steep stuff when both hands are needed to hang on.

Cheers for the link KN, that looks a lot better than the big mess I had planned to add to my pack.
Might be just me but I can see that getting caught on shit and dropping your rifle,me and those plastic clip things dont have a good track record.
On the few occasions I have been hunting (well once actually) this year I have used a fail-safe method of rifle carry. Its called the VC Pack horse.
When you get out of the car it asks you for your rifle, stuffs it in its flash harry pack, and then fucks off up the track at 9000 miles an hour.
If you want to use your rifle you just have to keep up................ how ever its not available at "any chemist" and does not come with free stuff and seems to operate solely on beer, (brand unimportant).
Must be getting on a bit...... Still got my old K2 pack, tough as nails pack- has a built in hook and stock strap specifically for rifle carrying, leaves your hands free but with practice you can pop the clip and get the rifle off the hook and spin the rifle in a"deer stalkers draw" while standing without taking the pack off, not much slower than spinning the rifle off your shoulder when slung and you can put it back again on the move. Not a fan of those scabbards, rifle sitting way low and a pain to access quickly, but I've never tried it either. Not a fancypants new age pack, looks like an 80's Groupie gettup, but I love it to bits, they might still make them.
