Hay guys this is why everyone should carry a pbl



I slipped down a bank tonight went a whole 3 - 4 feet and stopped. Bumped a small tree on the way and it ripped my shoulder from its socket.
Tryed about a doz times to pop it back in. Smashed over a punger and hit a tree but to no avail.
I made a sling with my hoodie and put my backpack on one arm grabbed the t3 walking pole.

I ended up climbing up to a point i had phone reception about 2 - 300y got a txt out to my emergency contact saying how i discloted my shoulder. I also phoned a mate hunting in the same area but his phone was at camp.
On my last amount of battery i managed to get a post up on the fishn hunt forum.
Unfortunately due to shock and no time it was a terrible message and as i tryed again my phone went flat.

I punched my pbl and over the next hour in darkness i let 4 shots off. about an hour later the chopper was in my area.
There was an issue and they couldn't pick up my pbl.
They finally spotted my torch on strobe but couldn't get to me.

I allways carry a wistle and was blowing that sucker about every 5min.
One of the groups hurd me on one of the tracks about 400y away and went to camp to alert yhe others.

About 5 hours after the slip
Philipo, hamish and one other guy from the grouo brought a sar guy to me.

We strapped the shit out of my arm and using a pole and in a lot of pain we all walked out.
About 2 hours later i was in the chopper on the way to rotovegas.

Got put on the gas and after many attempts they managed to get it back in.

Now im waiting on xrays to cheek for damage since it was out for so long.

Would love to thank the guys for coming up and making the way down as good as possible.

Hope you have a speedy recovery and have no other damage in there.

Shit can go bad so quickly and easily and can happen to any of us. Imagine injuring your leg to the point you can't walk at all. Broken ankle will do it. PLB is a must.

Bloody good advise @199p

I bought a PLB about 18months ago now, mainly to placate my Wife who was concerned that I hunt alone and would get lost or hurt.

I hadn't considered this before as I feel more comfortable (safe) in the bush than I do on the roads.

The PLB now sits in my top pocket with a lanyard around my neck when I'm Hunting and in my inside top pocket when I'm out on my Motorcycle

I even actively encourage others to buy one.

A PLB is an essential bit of kit that could save your life or the life of someone else in an emergency.


I'm glad there was a positive outcome for you 199p, hope your recovery is speedy too.

I'm also interested to know Why the Rescue Helicopter could not fix your position.

Yeah they thought i had switched it off but it was still flashing away the hole time.

My slip was a nothing slip. Was all that had terrain, wasnt all that slippy just a smal unlucky slide and it can turn into this.

I was well prepared tho. Dont know how people go out with no gear.

What brand is your PLB?

Any idea why they thought it was switched off?

Acl i think.

They said u know u dont have to save the batterys lol

As i told them for the 2nd time i didnt turn it off

My mate Tom broke his ankle on the Ruahine tops near Parks Peak a few years back.

He was heading down to the Sentry Box with an animal on-board, stepped in a small hole and arsed over breaking his ankle in the process.

Tom was hunting alone and did not carry a cell phone of PLB as this was not common practise back then.

Long story short, He sat on the track in considerable pain for about two hours then some Trampers came by and arranged for a rescue.

Bloody lucky aye.

If the trampers had not found him he would have spent at least the night there as we wouldn't have been too worried until the next morning.

A PLB would have seen him rescued much sooner.

He carries one now.

X rays done
Its all back in as it should be.

Will be going under the lazer or knife and hopefully no more worries.

Thanks for the report and reminder. This should be going into the hunting magazines.
