So it is looking like the permits in Southland hunting blocks such as the Blue Mountains, the Waikaia Forest and the Liethen Forest are to incur a fee of possibly $10 per application.
From what i have been told areas that are free shall remain so except for the Roar periods in Waikaia and Liethen, this will mean that the bluies will be charged per application.
How do we all feel about this?
WE FEEL FINE IF THEY PUT IT TO GOOD USE AND SHOW US WHERE IT GOES....
The answer to where it goes will be, To cover the costs of doing the ballot draws etc.
Malhunting do you know how many people apply for roar blocks in waikaia or leithen? - just seems like the cost of doing ballots would be easily covered by $10 an application? Unless theres other things they can put the money towards that benefits hunters?
549 last year for Waikaia/Leithen. Nearly 4k for Blue Mnts. I was at that meeting. The costing included things such as deer exclosures, "management" and stationary. The biggest cost (~22k) was for admin. To me it seems stupid because most of that cost was paying the DoC people to put your info into a computer program that drew the permits. As such I think it would be easy to have hunters put their own info into a web based thing that could talk to the already in place ballot program.
Sorry here is a break down of cost as provied by Colin Bishop (DoC)
• Costs $20,800
• stationery $4,436
• Advertising and newsletters $2,500
• Deer Exclusion Plots mtce $2,600
• Management $2,000
• Eftpos $2,092
• Overheads $5,000 (website, maps, etc)
• Blue Mts Dec-Jan closure $5,670
• TOTAL $44,378
• Cost per permit = 4,378/4,518 = $9.82 per application → $10

Seems overly expensive for what they are doing really - DOC invers are pretty helpful but $45K to get that many permits out seems a bit too much - could surely cut costs?

Yeah it is high and I agree that they should be looking at cost cutting (ie email out permits) but I think they put it up as an extreme case. I would ask that if stakeholders entered into this agreement, what sort of level of service can we expect?
Who issues permits for.ernslaugh blocks? Looking at moving back down and have a couple of spots that id like.to hunt legally this time:eek:

They do that them selves and are looking at the same deal. They are even hoping to have the weekend split so they can issue each day to a different party. Similar to what Wenita doo currently. Unless you can get gate codes Chris it is pretty hard to get into the place now...

Interesting that they have the website as a cost added to permits when none of the above mentioned blocks and on the website based permit system, and they have the Bluies closure time of Dec and Jan on there when as far as i know they want to remove that closure date as well or have they hit a road block with that?
Level of service should not change and i dont think it needs to i have always found the front desk there very helpful and obliging but what i see as a problem is this.Quote:

Also what about the scenario of the unlucky hunter who tries and tries to get a block but never gets one but gives DOC $40 to $100 for nothing, is there going to be a points system started to give these people a fair shot eventually instead of taking there money.

Im not suggesting the level of service change, just that as paying stakeholders there would be expectations. Like if they say we are paying for deer exclosures and "management" then thats what we will damn well get.. I think the system could be stream lined too. Currently it is an automated system for the Blue Mnts, not for Leithen and Waikaia, problem is the mannual input into that system. There is a "points" system for the Blue Mnts, again not for Leithen and Waikaia, and I think it works very well... I dont have a problem with anyday ballots as that gives you a better chance of getting a block which is offset by a higher chance of getting a poorer time...Quote:

The 6 that are already there...I know of exclosures in Rankleburn, tramways, top of armstrong, and carsons.
