    Pig Hunters in south auckland

hi there, 19 year old bloke looking for someone who can take me out pig hunting, getting a pup soon and want to start training it so could be cool to run my pup along as well, no Pigs in Hunua's and not sure about hunt able areas around me. Cheers.

There are pigs in hunua they just run and don't try to fight the dogs from what I've been told. Call up the local doc office and they should point you in the direction of a good number of pigs. Other wise try dome valley or coromandel.

Hunuas as in the park, are not controlled by DOC. It's Auckland Council/Waikato Regional Council.

The southern 1/2 is Doc and an open permit area. Access has to be arranged through Dilworths Rural campus and it's steep and choked with supple jack. ARC do give out permits for pig hunting but it's dogs and knives only. The other problem is DOC and ARC use professional cullers to keep goats down so the pigs are cautious.

So you're not allowed a rifle in hunua to try your luck on a goat?

The DOC part, yes. The Auckland Council part, no.

Ok cool. Is it worth it to go have a look?. Finding a place where doc don't cull goats near Auckland seems to be a rare occurrence.

That's the million dollar question. If you don't go, you won't know. Even a negative result is still a result that will help paint a picture of where the animals are or aren't.

Personally, I've not tried the DOC Hunua land, but have found goats and pigs in other North Waikato DOC reserves.

There's a fair bit of pig sign on the Western side of the Hunuas that are accessed off the Moumoukai hill road.

Try Maramarua Forest. It was showered with 1080 late 2014 I'm not sure what's left but it gets flooded with pig hunters on the weekends. You will need a permit tho and you'll have to park your car at the main road and walk it up.

There's been the odd pig I've seen stuck on the forest gates as a souvenir.

Hunting access and permits to Maramarua Forest (and other Rayonier/Matariki forests in these parts is through the Peninsula Pig Hunting Club. http://www.nzpighunting.org.nz/club/...g-hunting-club.

I will hopefully get my license by the end of April so I am trying to figure out if anything close to Auckland is worth going to. I will try it though as its very close. It will be good to get out there and try to figure out how everything works.

I'll give it a go. Are some parts better than others in maramarua?
