I'll send you some details on somewhere that's a little closer to Hamilton than Piro Piro and easier to Navigate for those new to the newbies and will get you both of what you seek...

    Piropiro is an enigma

I hunted full time not far away but I had controlled entry from outside so was lucky
Piropiro. I heard a lot about and knew a few regulars that hunted there
One was a school teacher who shot a lot of Deer there and another was an ex con who meat hunted and prob did a bit of gardening?
He shot a lot of Deer through Spring - Summer - teacher did more in Roar

Access to great country and also has plenty of hot pockets around the front ex log workings.
I am unsure of recent (past decade) 1080 effects on area - but my old area is still alive and good numbers so I see no reason why the Piropiro would be different

Problem I had - and why I seldom went there - was to many other hunters.
Must admit - was always amazed at how much sign was seen and just off the tracks too - shot 2 one evening with said con - then nearly got bushed for night as we had a major disagreement with direction out to track and Con went wrong way - dumped Deer and got out on dark, last time out with Con :-)

Far as I am aware - there has never been a casualty there - some close calls mind you.
Great social atmosphere in Roar etc - good camping area and vehicle access can be in a car

Some local knowledge help would assist in getting you off to a good start
Quad or 2 wheeler be good asset there

Think the Timber Trail rides have put a lot of hunters off using the area, still the animals there if you want to get a bit off the beaten track.
Too old to visit my old haunts across the river.

My uncle was a school teacher who hunted there back in the day he's the one who put me on to the place. That other bloke I think I know him ( certainly not a friend) did he have a kitted out Bedford?
