Poachers Fire on Forestry Workers

The above are the headlines in the NZ Farmer 16th Sept.

Forestry workers are dodging bullets from poachers", says a Forest manager. They are being fired at by people hunting wild pigs illegally released in the private Forests.


A lot of bullshit from a couple of drama queens. The journalist and the Forest Manager. A few days in a war zone would cure this man of such fucking fantasy's.

How do you dodge a bullet. Its much faster than you 'sunshine'

He goes on.... De La Mere said hunters releasing pigs were undermining work to eradicate TB.

This is an old favourite this...he should check up with a bit of the science around the place.

Over the last five years pigs have been released on Molesworth Stations by Animal health Board and DOC as TB indicators. Landcare Research have declared the pig as an End Host....Not believed to spread TB.

Yeah you would of dodged more bullets Scribe than those monkeys. More bloody nonsense from the media. And I see that article about the 100 cows died from lead poisoning is in there too. Well our forumites have confirmed it was less being neighbours of the effected property.

Of course if the dirty bastard poachers actually are letting off rounds in the general direction of forestry workers (whether deliberately or just because they're morons) then they deserve to be locked up and their firearms (and licence) taken off them permanently.

I wouldn't fire rifles anywhere near the forestry blokes on the block next to me, they have a 44 gallon drum for their boil ups and excavators to bury your vehicle...probably ream you out with your rifle before bending you over a fresh cut stump...everyone is entitled to a safe work zone...as for releasing pigs, it is not about whether they are a "end host", it is about being against the law.

You don't need Legal training to see that all 3 statements are falsehoods and are an attempt to demonise a certain group of unknown individuals.

Its only a short step away from saying the solution will be to get rid of all game and that will rid the country of hunters as well.

1/ As the word 'Poachers' signify more than one person firing more than one shot on more than one 'workers' and as no one has been arrested how can it ascertained that the workers were fired upon by pig hunters? hunting released pigs?. It could be some raging lunatic from the local town hunting pigeons.

2/ I know that forestry workers didn't dodge bullets. That's Patently absurd as you cant dodge a bullet.

3/ I also know that there is no proof that they were fired at by people hunting wild pigs that had been deliberately released As one could not tell if the pigs were released pigs, or if they were being hunted at the same time the bullets were supposedly being fired at the Forestry Workers.

This story has no more substance than the story over the page. And this story begins...About 100 cows on a Southland farm have died or had to be put down after an outbreak of lead poisoning

If you hear shots and bullets hitting nearby objects and you hit the deck and/or hide behind something, would you describe that as dodging bullets? I'm sure many people would, even if its not each individual bullet being dodged.

The forestry workers may have seen said poachers with dead pigs before being fired at by them? That would be pretty conclusive of them being pig poachers, though you're right that it doesn't mean the pigs they were poaching were deliberately released beforehand.

In general I agree about crap reporting and I'm often among the first to poke holes in the media (don't get me started on everything in the Mount Cook National Park area being 'on Mount Cook'!) - but you seem to be making some assumptions about it too. Cracking down on poachers is no bad thing at all, they royally screw up a lot of public opinion and access for honest hunters.

Right you are Ben. No, you may be taking cover from fire, not dodging bullets. Unless they are thrown at you by hand.

Poaching is a strange word to use in this case. If released pigs were indeed being hunted 'Poaching' is the wrong word. Its emotive. There are a few more suitable charges. If workers were indeed fired upon there are suitable charges for that too. But I doubt that is true because the Armed Offenders would be all over the Forest Like a rash and so would every news outlet in the country.

Access to hunting areas and public opinion is damaged by this sort of article appearing in a farming magazines. People do believe what lazy Journalist who try to add spice to their poorly written articles present them with.

Gun Clubs are worried now at the potential reaction all over the country because people have read that "100 cows have died or been put down because of lead Poisoning".

Fair enough, can understand your view - though I'm not sure of a more suitable word than 'poaching' for illegally hunting animals on someone elses land?

Too make the police actually take notice, using the wording "armed intruder" and "I fear for my safety" instead of "poacher" when notifying them of people on your property carrying firearms.

I know two wrongs don't make a right...But it is illegal for our Government to target Pigs, Deer, and Goats, With the current crop of aerial dropped poisons Brodifacoum and 1080.

But staying within the law worries them not.
