    Possum Fur Prices

    Good evening everyone,

I've got 4.2kg of fur sitting in my garage and I can't seem to find any info on the current fur prices. Also does anyone know any buyers in the Auckland-Taupo kind of area?

Local trapper was telling me last week that his normal buyer who buys locally will only take "machine plucked" this year, he didn't know why. Maybe the demand has dropped and their getting choosey.

Is he only buying machine plucked, or only paying the machine plucked rate?

Only buying machine plucked, buyer reckoned the fur ends up different between hand and machine, has stopped a few young guys who did a few for pocket money.

Local guy here reckons the machine plucked fur is better quality. Have to wonder about that when you see how one of those backpack motorised ones work and how it treats your hands if you get too close to rotor.

When I was doing it, machine plucked fur was paid at a lesser rate, because you could pluck the entire carcass clean, all length fibres mixed. Hand plucked was more selective, so able to be used for minimum length orders. And therefore commanded a premium.

Put it in the freezer otherwise you risk moths getting into it unless its super well sealed.
