    Poutaki hut

    Hi all

Been having a scroll through some maps and the Whakarara range/Poutaki hut area sparked a bit of interest for me.
What is access like to the area as it looks like mainly through forestry? not too worried about animal numbers as I'm sure there'll be some around.
Looks like a fair bit of regrowth around, is there much open/glassing country?
Will try head in for a look in the near future when I suss out access.

    Thanks in advance

Haven't actually been to the hut so not much help but the access is through Gwavas forest. Would try get a permit but could be hard now it’s been handed back. Otherwise can walk from whakarara road end across into Yeomans but would be a fair distance.

Had a mate walked in there early last year, and bowled one off the side of the track just before the hut.
But he mentioned something like an hour, or an hour and a half's walk along the road just to get to the start of the track.

Yeah I went in there a few months ago, was about 7k road walk from memory from the old mill.
Grab a permit online, the huts very nice, been done up buy bct. tracks really overgrown and hard to follow.
Bugger all glassing, lots of animals in there, a mate shot some massive stags in the roar.

The Whakas holds a shit load of animals, deer and pigs. Some tiger country in there which is probably why it’s so good. Plus being surrounded by some nice private and forestry.

Don’t choose the wrong ridge if you’re thinking of coming home a different way haha you’ll be cursing!!
Just go for a walk mate, it’s a cool walk.
Barlow Hut is not far away from same start point. Good river walk, just keep an eye on weather as can come up easily. Unsure what it’s like after the cyclone, but up past Barlow the trout fishing was awesome and plenty deer round at the right parts of the day
