After a busy few last weeks, building a new front fence and back porch i was able to get out for a wander Saturday evening,
My plan was to park at my local forestry block and do a loop following a creek bed up to a wallow I had found last roar then climb over the ridge and sidle back along to where the creeks join up, Arriving at the block to find the wind a bit gusty and semi overcast but i wasn't to concerned as it was good to be out in the hills.
After parking the truck I set of up the track planning to cut left through the gums into the creek bed, As soon as i got of the track there was plenty of fresh sign(a promising start) and only got more plentiful as i approached the creek then saw a yearling no more than thirty yards ahead of me grazing I watched her for about ten minutes before she mooched of into the gums.
Now only Fifty yards to the wallow I slowly made my way up the creek bed toward the wallow seeing more and more stag sign and hearing thrashing, things were looking promising wind still in my face and creating enough noise in the canopy to mask my footsteps on the cornflakes on the forest floor, I let out a low moan but no reply, waited a couple of minutes and crept forward,
Twenty yards from the wallow i felt a sudden gust on the back of my neck (F*&k) and at that moment everything was quiet. Knowing he had smelt me i carried on up to check it out.Romeo's place.
As the wind had now changed direction it worked perfectly for my original plan, climbing up and over the ridge
and make my back along the face and back down to the creek and back to the truck, the return trip was uneventful as no animals seen but plenty of sign. Then down to the creek and back to the truck, as i popped out of the gums bugger me what do i see another yearling standing between me and the wagon then she bolted.
Will go back this weekend and try for round two,
To be continued.....
