    Pureora north block wander

Decided to go for a last look before the green rain starts in august,I did a couple of loop hunts on old logging hauler tracks both daylight and evening, very top end of ngaroma road, and about 14 km mark ,I hunt with an indicater dog who is pretty good at what she does, gps says I did a total of 18km on Saturday ,end of story I didn’t see a thing and the dog didn’t get to keen apart from one spot where the only fresh tracks I came across crossed the track, there had been plenty of rain during the week so was hoping the deer would be out and about and knew any prints I came across would be fresh, weather was really good though which made it please to be out and about and at least I can scratch a couple of areas off the list where the deer obviously aren’t in the colder months,
Guess that’s why they call it hunting and not shooting!!gonna be stuffed soon anyways thanks to the poisin drop.

Pureora was never easy hunting after May until late Oct
Something my dog taught me - was Deer were in very strange places
Like - areas that you would think to damp or cold - but obviously feed

Also Deer would hardly move in winter
Dog would take me into a area maybe less than 5 acres - and it would be like a cattle yard
Chopped up and shit everywhere - then move out of there and see not a print for rest of day
But if you were walking tracks - no - be a lottery

Found the same scenario in winter
They always seek a North facing might sidle a ridge
They don't move far and try too keep as warm as they can
    Conserve energy
They could well be in real tight bush the last place you would expect to find them
    Even tight overhead cover
Makes it hard to stalk them they will hear you coming before you hear them

I was in the same spot on Saturday but had to hunt a few new areas as it was almost as busy as the roar with utes! Probably due the upcoming green rain! Me and pup did find a few likely areas with not bad sign but you could of heard a pin drop it was that quiet also as usual in their the wind would do a 180 and that’d be it!
