quick over nighter in the Tararuas

Hello all, brand new to this site so thought Id start with a photo and a short yarn.
I went out to one of my locals spots in the Tararua's that's always given me a good success rate, the deer sign was fairly average I guess, no better or worse than usual. I got onto a hind in the bush yesterday but she gave me the slip, (cant win em all) so out again this morning for quick look on the flats, I poked my head around a corner and this fella and one of his girlfriends was in the Toitoi on the bush edge, the spiker was broadside looking at me so no time to goof around, a quick up and shoot saw him lung shot at around 60 metres distance, he ran about 10 yards and ran out of steam. The freezer will be refreshed after its hung for a few days, and I'm now at home resting up after a well earned shower and cold one. I'll probably give it a couple of weeks and go again, I'll take the fishing rod next time, any excuse to laze around the river in the heat of the day.

Welcome to the forum and great first post.

We used to have a "one shot kill" on the forum but after a forum hunt he had to change his name to " two shot kill"

Thanks, yeah been hunting a fair while, about 25 years now, started when I was a kid going out with my dad and brothers. Like most I started off trapping possums and shooting Hares/bunnies. The Tararuas aint pretty but reliable, That suppressor is a Gunworks maximus, and its on a Bergara single shot (hence the name) 7mm-08, I've used a heap of different calibres and rifles, bolt, semi etc, there is something about single shots that just really appeals to me, nice and basic, I just shoot to eat, so have no interest in bombing up a mob or dropping a second animal (although I have been known to) Carrying one is plenty of work on its own.

Extremely accurate even with cheap ammo, I use Remington Corelockt or Hornady whitetail ammo, both retail around $40-$45. I tightened up the zero at the range on Saturday, 5 shots in an inch group at 100, yes that would be impressive at 200 yards but I zero at 100 and was tickled pink with that group, I sight in off a very solid steel base so there is no wiggle room from breathing or heartbeat. I have never noticed recoil without suppressors unless on the range after 15-20 shots, yes suppressors are supposed to dampen recoil, but when your amped up shooting an animal the last thing on your mind is recoil, I have used 30-06 and 280 cals without suppressors, never paid any attention or noticed recoil while hunting, just a loud boom.
