Thread: Queenstown/Alexandra area to take game meat to stay frozen before flying back to US?

Hey, I will be visiting the south island for a Fallow deer hunt next year. I can process the meat myself no problem, I'm just wondering where I could take the meat to freeze it and keep frozen until I'm ready to pick it up before I head to the airport preferably close by Queenstown/Alexandra... to put in a cooler to bring back home to the US. Any help would be much appreciated!

Check into home kill butchers in the area. They will likely process, package, label(this is important) and freeze your meat until you are ready to fly out. Foam coolers in checked bags will keep frozen meat frozen for plenty long to get back to the US. The labels are important so that USDA inspectors can tell what species and where the meat is from. If you decide to process on your own, I would highly recommend using some official looking labels, not just a permanent marker. When I did this in 2019, the home kill butcher we used was very reasonable and we were each able to bring 50lb of meat back to the states.

That will end up the most expensive meat once it’s arrived at its destination, are you sure it’s worth it ?

There is a home kill butcher in Arrowtown. You will have to skin the animals.
