You'll learn one day that it's not worth it --- and rarely does it benefit you in return! Let them do the hard work and ask you after that.

Yeah mate I know what you mean. I just like helping people out and when its not going to affect me, all I really want is a "cheers mate" or "good on ya" in return.
I've learnt a lot of the NZ forums from some top blokes and good bastards so like to help out others when I can.

First up, sincere apologies for the delayed response - I haven't even made it back on to read anything since my initial post last Friday and have had my reply to JoshC 'auto-saved' in here since. Never intended on getting any backs up, nor being away from my post for a whole week!

Thanks @JoshC for the advice. I definitely plan on doing my own grunt work and want to stress that I'm not looking for an easy ride - more trying to avoid heading into an area for 2-3 days to find out that she's bone dry! I'll take you up on the private message after some preliminary planning on my next outing

@Duck - I had skimmed over that area on the web not so long ago and have a 4x4 so that could work. I'd be keen to go for a walk one weekend in spring when things have thawed out a little.

@possum_shooter - I've replied (I think) to your message, let me know if it hasn't shown up.

Had a feeling you may have just been away for a bit. In my experience, no DOC blocks in the Queenstown area will be bone dry, most hold pretty good animal numbers if you hunt them logically and properly.

Think about where the animals would prefer to be at this time of year, ie north facing slopes where there's less snow (at the moment) and then choose your hunting area from there.

Down here, further in is also not always better for animal numbers. I have a couple of spots within an hours drive of Queenstown where most hunters continue right past on their way into 'better' country.

If you are heading further south at anytime, let me know, might be able to catch up and have a yarn about potential spots and such.

Went for a walk up the top of the Old Woman Range a few weekends ago. One goat seen @ 1200y + some relatively new hoof prints. Easy access in a 4x4 off the Nevis road. Heaps of feed and not a lot of sign so those animals leaving prints must be few and far between. Some good guts in there for animals to hide in... if you had the time to wait them out.

I'm planning to be in Wanaka for a few days on early September. Would love to be able to do a eady hunt for hares in a valley or rabbits, goats or fallow.

I cannot do hard hunts anymore.
