After a hunt the other weekend I had a fear my scope had been knocked after a few trips and tumbles in some slippery conditions and a missed shot. I had neither the time or resources to resight it before the next weekend where I had a day trip planned to chase tahr.
I thought I would print out some targets and keep them in my pack in case it was shooting off. Sure enough, I have a tahr lined up at about 150 yd and clean miss it. Wasn't any monster but wouldve been my first bull and I was mostly keen on the skin for a rug.
Managed to set one of my targets up on the other side of the ridge against some tussock and let one round off. To no surprise, it was shooting well off. With a quick guesstimate of my range to target, I dialed the scope in a few clicks and let another one go - much closer. A few final clicks and thought 'that'll have to do'.
Punched further up into the now snowy tahr country and came across a few bulls, one of which seemed a bit more mature than the rest. Some friendly terrain allowed me to close the gap to within a promising distance for my thereabouts rifle accuracy and manage to sack my first bull.
Measured 10 inches and had a nice thick coat on it, in great condition. Not the perfect big blonde mane but still a trophy for me. Skin, head and meat whipped off and packed home for a memorable trip.
Fair to say I was grateful that I brought the target and was able to save the hunt somewhat. Next trip will be to the range no doubt.
PS: I know sighting your rifle in on DOC land is 'illegal' but given it was only 2 shots and totally necessary, I think what I did is fair game.
