They’re not that hard to tip over. A decent bullet in .308 or .30-06 is fine as long as it arrives at the right place. Was lucky enough to live in Alaska long enough to be a “resident” for hunting and fishing. .308 is all I owned. The locals (as in the natives), often used a lot less. Yanks tended to lie their cannons though, .300 win mag was common, and have to admit I did use a loaned one on one trip.

When you're a resident is it much cheaper and easier than a foreign person?

Massively. A resident hunt and fish license is bugger all. Tags for moose were also next to nothing, or free depending on areas, and no requirement for a guide. Most of my moose hunting was under an hours drive from home - basically one a year is what you can take. I suspect I spent about $100 per year in licenses /tags etc while I was there. Some things were dearer (bison, musk ox, sheep etc) but I was never lucky enough to draw them (balloted for that stuff) so never had to opportunity to purchase a tag for them.

Yeah. In BC however you need to draw a bull tag to tag a mature bull, even as a resident you can only shoot spike or 2 point bulls and cows.
I can get a Moose tag for under 100 bucks for the area I have been working but it doesn't mean I can shoot a trophy bull unless I draw a tag or go thru an outfitter.

@R93 on that, on an episode of Yukon men, one of the locals shot a moose I think for a latchpot? or maybe just for winter food.
Not a bad set of antlers from memory but while they were culturally allowed to take it, they did put the saw through at least one side of the antlers. I suppose this is a way they stop dodgy trophy hunters and locals bending the rules.

First nations people seem to do what they want as well. They are not interested in trophies and treasure the meat. My boss has gifted a fair bit of meat this season.
I have seen the odd moose kill in the morning in spots that were not there on dark the previous night.
It is their land after all I spose.



I am hoping to be given a tag next season. I have a bull I would like to catchup with.

I also suppose being on the telly they would at least look like they are doing the right thing for the fish and game rangers even if they didn't the rest of the time.

Yeah definitely. All the F nation people I have run into were friendly and helpful no matter what state they were in.

Not sure if I will bring a head and cape back to NZ to be mounted or have it done here.
Even a salted cape weighs more than 23 kgs then the antlers can be as heavy again.

I have my hands full with this one

No mate but had the other 2 guides in there the last few days before they flew home to NZ and Sask.
Airnz screwed me on flights etc so had to stay in PG a couple extra days.

That sort of wildlife is too fast for me at my age

Yup, moose is friggen good alright. Especially the eye fillet after a few days chilling in the snow. Had some rutty stuff when I first got here but the rest was excellent.

Great post this one brings back memories that I would like to experience again. If a moose hunt is on your to do list do it it is one of the best hunting experiences you will have.

Well looks like I’ll be hunting moose next year in B.C all things going well,long time between now and next September, deposit being paid today then it’s the waiting and planning and waiting some more.
Thanks to all on here that supplied me with info, it’s quite nerve racking pulling the trigger on something like this( well for me anyway ) and being able to talk to those that have been and done it really helps !!
So in the spirit ( see what I did there ) of this forum here’s a couple of bottles for the Toby shoot

Good stuff. Hope you nail a big boy.
Get on YouTube and learn some moose calls. Your guide should do most of the calling but it is good to know some and the trick is not to call too often. Also what calls to make in certain situations. Also be patient.
Once you kill one it takes a couple days to get it ready for the trip home and that has to be done during your allocated hunt time.
Hopefully you're hunting from about the 25th September on, as the rut should be in full swing.
