It was a bloody beautiful day up the hill @Dundee. I went to catch up with this sika stag i have captured a few times on the game camera. Finally worked out where he is hanging out over the winter.

I was in super stealth stalking mode, dropping down this steep gully following very fresh stag prints, then i could smell deer, more fresh shit and prints, wind coming up the gully in my face, beautiful. I was dropping down through some thick shit to try and break out into a more open area, i lose my footing and slip and make a bit of noise, instantly a sika warning squeal at all of 10m breaks the morning silence, god it was loud too. I squealed back in an attempt to stop him long enough to get eyes on him, unfortunately didnt work this time. Didnt even get a glimpse, the following squeals getting further and further away had that gnarly raspy end to them (like the end of a sika stags roar). Awesome.

I hung my top on a tree, and walked off as far away as i could and still see back to it, in the hope he may come back to check it out, waiting for 15 mins, that didnt work either. I guess Sika stags dont get old by being stupid eh.

Oh well, it was nice being out there doing it, making the most of a short gap in the weather. Beats working any day!

    Your onto him alright.

Sounds like spine tingling stuff............ but I'm not surprised he gapped it.

Don't Squeal back..... that's their fuck of your gonna get hammered by what ever made that noise signal.

    Try a soft Mew instead.

He might mistake you for a fawn long enough for you to drop your cross hairs on him.

    Better luck next time.

BTW he might be a good 8 next year.

    Cheers
    Pete

Hey Pete, yeah its awesome being up close to sika when they squeal or roar eh, incredible sounds.

As soon as i squealed back at him i thought "what the hell did i do that for?" and thought in this situation i should have tried to imitate a hind or a fawn to try and explain the noise i made. It just came out as a natural instinct sort of thing, bugger it. Im picking he may have seen me anyhow.

Oh well, just like the stag, i will live and learn ;-)

Hes a 7 now Pete, missing the inner top on one side, and pretty poor tops on the other side, so i dont think he'll get any better? But I'm certainly no expert at this stuff.
