    Recomendations - Kaimanawa Huts

Don’t want to count chickens but Auckland could be in lvl 2 by next weekend. As such I’d be free to travel for a hunt, like every other man and his dog in Auckland.

I’m keen for a Sika trip but I know since it’s first weekend of freedom, Clements will look like the toilet paper isle on the day before lockdown.

Happy to spend half a day or so to walk to a hut or good camp spot. Not looking for people’s special spots. Just a place that’s less likely to be busy. At this point I’m considering Cascade hut.

Cascade hut is a fair walk in but on a good track. Was down at Tiki Tiki last year and track OK to there. All the area around Te Iringa was 1080 poisoned during the winter as far as I know down to the Kiapo so I would think further east would be still good maybe Omarua hut area. Other people might have the same idea but there is plenty of area and you can walk in via Poronui starting at Heli Sika and follow the poled route about 12km.

Hey @Mooseman, I can’t find any record of the 1080 on here https://maps.doc.govt.nz/externalmap...sticidesummary
    Am I missing something?

They were going to poison but I think it's been put off until next year.

There’s still nothing on that map, which should have proposed application listed..as far as I’m aware atleast

Fly camp would be ideal if the weather cooperates.

Prior to Cyclone Bola, used to do a early summer wonder from South of Taupo off SH 1 across to the Tauranga-Taupo flats below Cascade, up to Cascade then over the hill, down North Arm to Boyd then over to Tussock and picked up from there. Feel tired now even thinking about it. Used to do the same sort of wanders in Te Urewera.

Looks as if it was postponed which is good, hope the repellent is used when it is done.
