Recommendations for first overnight hunting trip

Hi all. Thanks for the great info being shared on here. I have just got my firearms license and am looking to go on my first overnight hunting trip. I am based in mid Canterbury so looking to go within a 2/3 hour drive then walk to a hut. I have a 4x4 and will be going with a mate of mine. Any recommendations on areas/huts to set up base in? Will be midweek so hopefully not too busy. Feel free to pm me. Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the forum.
Experience. What you get just after you needed it.

Plenty of promising Doc blocks where you are. Don't have to travel more than 1 hour to get into productive country.

Welcome aboard, very few animals around these days probably multiple trips without a sighting. Enjoy the experience and eventually things will come together for you. Good luck.

There are very good deer numbers around most public land spots in Canterbury, try the RHA in the Lewis pass - hope river or doubtful range.

Yes I'm joking just telling them to go look for themselves and enjoy the process of finding out

Book with DOC go spend night in pinnacles hut midweek. Sit on doorstep and use binoculars. Go up on the knob/spur right by the hut n use your binoculars.wont guarantee you will get an animal but be unusual if you don't see one.

I would strongly recommend joining the NZ Deerstalkers association. Most clubs have some really helpful members who will mentor new hunters. Clubs also do group hunts and training programs.

You are in hunting heaven. Lots of local farms have plenty of wallabies and fallow deer.
