    Recommendations Kaikoura/Marlborough Kids Meat Hunt

    Gday all,

Wanting to take my kids on a meat hunt. The block I hunt is very thick and steep and not suited for the kids.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for a free range top of the south meat hunt. We're based in Blenheim.

A google search brings up a few places in Kaikoura:
    Puhi Peaks
    Glenburn
    Glencree

Any first hand experience? We are not looking for a trophy or luxury type experience.

    Thanks

Give Puhi a ring and explain what its for. I'm sure they can sort you on to a yearling.

Could prob try calling round any of the safari parks and see what they could do. The guys in Oaro - I think it was https://www.glencree.co.nz/? Offered a meat hunt deal a couple of years ago for about $250 for guide and cull animal… can’t remember if there was a minimum number of people.. only took an afternoon. Could try giving them a bell and see?

The meat off a yearling in Puhi peaks is likely to fit into a large snaplock bag, they are quite possibly the smallest red deer in the southern hemisphere.

We used to have permission to hunt the farm adjacent to puhi peaks and your comment couldn't be more true. Great fun to hunt though with game tucked into almost every little corner so plenty of opportunities to make stalks. We once decided to weigh a boned out yearling red from there, as I recall it was under 20kg of meat maybe closer to 15kg. There seems to be quite a few fallow getting through the area now and apparently they are doing much better than the long legged hares (red deer).

Definitely some better sized animals at Glencree but the puhi valley is a neat place tucked right up under the seaward Kaikouras, great adventure for kids. They'll see a heap of game but just don't expect a whole heap of venison.

These are all great options to know about. All the public land places I hunt in Kaiks are damn near vertical and not great for kids! An affordable private meat hunt like that is a good option to have up the sleeve, cheers guys. Hope your kids enjoy it.
