Thread: Ribbon markers

Does anyone know what the pink and blue ribbons tied to trees indicate?
I thought it was for traps but saw quite a few on a walk up a side creek today with nothing near them that I could see.

Yeah I thought that too but it was just a riverbed really so no real need for that.
Only other thing I could think of was sites for monitoring birds or something

Sometimes they’re used for trapline marking for the start of the line rather than each particular trap. “From marker, one trap every x metres along y bearing”

Pink/Blue is for traplines isn't it? Pink is to mark the trapline and Blue the actual trap location

Thanks, I couldn’t find any traps near them but it has had heavy rain within the last few months so things could well have washed away

I use them to mark the start of path for climbing up around around buy passing bluffs.

Some trap lines around here blue markers for trap locations, other times just mark start of trapline. Pink ribbon to mark track. Some places around sounds you’d think the person marking the tracks had shares in the manufacturing plant or they’re not very confident navigating bush.

In my park workplace, blue tape indicated a botanical issue (species under research, or a weed to be monitored after control measures) and pink tape was for pest control. They usually had code letters/numbers. or a compass bearing on them. Blue tape might indicate a survey line prior to making a new track, or a route into a cannabis plantation(!). DoC and Regional Councils and research agencies use different coloured tape for a whole range of reasons. There is no national standard for the use of tape in the forest.

You can buy marker tape in any farm supply shop, all kinds of useful colours.

Around here DOC and Project Janszoon (Abel Tasman National Park management group) use pink triangles or tapes for pest control lines with blue for individual traps.

Tramping tracks have the usual orange triangles.

Agree, some people would leave a continuous guide line if they could be bothered carrying a big enough ball of string. Where’s the adventure?
