Interesting - possibly more of an issue for pig shooters if they are more likely to use big bore short range calibres in lead?

Personally I just don't bother carrying out the shot up meat.
But I do eat a huge amount of game meat.
Just had my bloods done last week for an upcoming operation and now wish I had got the lead checked with the same blood samples.
Also an issue for those doing bullet casting.
Re close range lead bullets and pigs.
I got the impression that it might have been more of an issue with jacketed bullets at fast speed and there being microscopic fragments left along the way.
I have heaps of recovered projectiles and some look like they have been worn away and melted on the end, so expect they were tiny pieces that were still in there somewhere.
Dog gets the slightly shot and bloodier pieces so maybe she is more likely to have an issue !
I understood that lead was only asorbed in a gaseous state as you melted it for casting and inhaled the fumes, any one know any more about this
You can be poisoned by lead in states other than a gas. We had a dog that had lead poisoning from drinking water with a lead compound dissolved in it.
He was acting very confused and trotting around aimlessly making a low howling sound.
Vet gave him a shot of EDTA and he came right within a few minutes
Lead is a very emotive subject (like firearms) to the ill-informed news media (possible purveyors of deliberate misinformation?). Lead in its natural state is a commonly occurring element in the earth (like oil and asbestos) and does no harm in its natural state. It is only when it is vapourised (fumes from melting) or finely powdered then ingested that problems can occur. Unless our intrepid hunter has been consuming shot-up meat which could contain lead particles then I would look elsewhere for his high blood levels.
the main cause of lead poisoning is by inhalation, in its gaesous form lead is nasty stuff. not quite as nasty as high velocity lead but still bad. if you ate a small amount of lead it will take natures course with no ill effects. exposed to it daily its accumulative. same with mercury and most heavy metals
petrol used to contain tetra ethyl lead as an anti knocking agent and also to lube the valves. they took it out and replaced it with benzene which is a 100 times worse.
I would have thought that most people wouldn't be eating shot up meat for more obvious health reasons. Ducks might be an exception, but luckily, I don't get many of those!
Lead poisoning from meat shot by a cast projectile is very unlikely, as the bullet at best flattens and does not give the lead snowstorm effect you often see with cup n core jacketed bullets in shoulders when bone gets involved

does anyone here know about the hair test for heavy metals? im sure i read somewhere that people in the trade can get it done at taxpayers expense. I think the hair sample goes over seas for the test.
I remember nursing an old bloke whod been an old time plumber .drainlayer in the days of lead pipes being used domestically
.IIRC hed had lead poisoning due to prolonged exposure to high doses of the stuff over his years of work.

Any laboratory with an AAS(atomic absorption spectrophotometer) should be able to run the test. Its a question of if they are accredited to do it.Quote:
